OP fixed for accuracy

It's official.

Colin Powell wrote:

"It isn't easy for me to disappoint Sen. McCain in the way that I have this morning, and I regret that," Powell, interviewed on NBC's "Meet the Press," said of his longtime friend, the Arizona senator.

"But I firmly believe that at this point in America's history, we need a president that will not just continue, even with a new face and with the changes and with some maverick aspects, who will not just continue basically the policies that we have been following in recent years," Powell said.

"I think we need a transformational figure. I think we need a president who is a generational change and that's why I'm supporting Barack Obama, not out of any lack of respect or admiration for Sen. John McCain."

Nothing really matters at this point, but it's nice to see. I'm sure it'll pull in a few vets, if anything.

State by State polls indicate so. Unless Obama's hit by a political bombshell or the economy suddenly turns to Superhappyfunland, it's not looking likely that anything's going to change from here on out until Nov. 4th.

Well, in Virginia he's leading by 8 points which is pretty substantial...and the rest of the states, he has double digit leads. Colorado has had him leading for months now as well.

We shall see. Polls are a lot more indicative than most people think.

Then again, most McCain supporters think they don't matter at all... Wonder why?

Well if you are dumping all of your faith in polls maybe. But McCain has actually creeped up in some of them lately also.

This endorsement does matter. And I'm not just talking a few vet votes. Obama has been hit on his lack of military experience ever since he began his campaign. This will help him out.

If Powell, retired chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, does endorse, he blesses Obama as a capable leader who is able to manage critical national security and foreign policy matters.

I can already imagine the conservative reaction here and everywhere else.

-Powell's endorsing Obama because he's black.

I just use RCP, and he's been within the 6-9 point range for about 2 weeks now.

I'm sure it'll help. What I meant to say was that he'll still be leading when the day is done. Will it help increase his lead? Probably by a little bit, sure. I'm sure it'll pull some undecided votes in.

McCain however...well...

I think he'll be pulling a Brett Favre/Hillary Clinton soon.

Pretty substantially in Bush's favor. In the end he only has a 1.5 lead, and that's 4.4 points less than Obama has on RCP atm.

conservative nitwit reaction.

I keep forgetting the republican party's recent divergence.

And I was thinking mostly of our conservative friends who still think Obama is an muslim arab, and that everything is gunna be about race" when "that one" is elected.

North Carolina doesn't sell Hippie tags?  They really should control their hippie population, for future generations.

We used to a have a tree hugger problem here in Oregon.  Deer hunters have their antlers, hippie hunters prize those elusive long and stinky dreadlocks on the males and hairy pits on the females.

I had an ex that was from Oregon. She used to go on and on about how beautiful it was. Then I kicked her out.

It really is a beautiful state, though. She was right.

Edit: Even if she failed for other reasons.

Damnit.. If Colin Powell would've run for President, THAT would've been a race.

Black-ish with experience, integrity, and intelligence (Powell) versus Black-ish with NO experience, but gives good speech (Obama).

http://www.pbs.org/newshour/extra/teach … trine.html

Colin Powell I have a good deal of respect for.  He earned his place in the military, then in politics.
Obama is the F***ing Cheshire Cat - All big toothy smile, no substance or experience.

I would laugh at the voter turnout in the Deep South if that was the race. I bet some rural counties would see under 20%, or at least under 20% casting their votes for a major party candidate.

Powell is a mutually respected military man.
According to whom?
After the UN fiasco he admitted himself he had lost virtually all credibility, and then pretty much disappeared.

According to most of congress and both party leaders. If people actually took the time to learn about the circumstances you would see that he fought it. Ultimately he has to serve the President. We saw the truth when the freedom of information act allowed us to see behind the scenes.

Colin Powell wrote:

Terrorists are not greatest threat to nation.

"What is the greatest threat facing us now? People will say it's terrorism. But are there any terrorists in the world who can change the American way of life or our political system? No. Can they knock down a building? Yes. Can they kill somebody? Yes. But can they change us? No. Only we can change ourselves. So what is the great threat we are facing?"
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co … 01414.html
"Former secretary of state Colin L. Powell said yesterday that he decided to publicly oppose the Bush administration's proposed rules for the treatment of terrorism suspects in part because the plan would add to growing doubts about whether the United States adheres to its own moral code."
Powell tried to talk Bush out of war
"The former American secretary of state Colin Powell has revealed that he spent 2½ hours vainly trying to persuade President George W Bush not to invade Iraq and believes today’s conflict cannot be resolved by US forces."
He was fighting nearly the entire administration. McCain is going to have a tough time tearing down his military credentials. He won't have to though. Most people are ignorant to the fact that he tried to prevent the war.. so it wont matter.
