I did some latency testing and here are the results

Acer Aspire One netbook with nothing plugged in, not even powercord:

Same but with wireless disabled:

A dual core PC:

Even with wireless disabled my netbook has been proven to be a worse transport (for a USB DAC) than my desktop PC (minty should know what I'm talking about)

I will test another 3 laptops that I own tomorrow.

If anyone wants to test latency on your Netbook or any other PC for that matter, here's the software download link:

Ohhh, interesting. Unfortunately it is windows only If you know of a mac program to check latency, I'll give that a try.

When using a USB DAC, would there be any real audible difference between the PC and netbook (with wireless on)?

I've just discovered something big today because of this latency checker. I noticed that the latency is extremely high even when wireless is off so I completely disabled it-I had an Asus wireless lan PCMCIA card and when it was completely disabled I could listen music with my external USB DAC without any drop-outs. Before I had drop-outs every couple of seconds and I thought the old Compaq's USB ports must be old and of poor quality.
It works fine when connected with a network cable. So I would really recommend that your media centre isn't on wireless if you're serious in audio.
I recently started streaming from my PC to my PS3 and also had drop-outs. You can only guess once what kind of connection there is between these two devices. I will try to connect it with a cable tomorrow.

I'm using something inbetween a Meganote and a Mininote.

Compaq Presario CQ60

It's fine for sitting using around the house, and taking in my bag if I go to work so I can watch a dvd on the bus or sit in Starbucks.

Going to upgrade the ram in it at some point though.

sorry about the threadrez but

i might be getting a netbook. recommendations for one, anyone? obviously it should be cheap and light but i feel that that's almost a given, and i would like something with really good battery life.

Anything from ASUS. The 1000HE has 9.5 hours of battery life with 160GB HDD (not SSD) and the new chiclet keyboard that is supposed to be really nice. That's the one I would buy if I was in the market.

There are other models out there with different design shapes (the Seashells) and whatnot, but it depends on what you want to do. The others from ASUS all have about 5 hours of battery life in the 10" family, iirc. Shop around, though.

small, cheap, good battery life, keyboard is easy to use and screen is legible. nothing fancy or design award-winning.

The 1000HE then. The 10" netbooks are all relatively standard in their specs, but it's the battery life and chiclet keyboard that, for me, set it apart from the rest of the competitors. I think it weighs like 900g? Maybe 1kg?

Thinking of getting this too

Is the difference in price between these two purely down to the OS?
http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/242843/s … l#tab:info Menzo's
http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/253568/s … l#tab:info Pretty much the same but 80-100 euros more expensive

Or is there something better on the market?
