I just use the YouTube Downloader 300 (very imaginative naming) program. A bit glitchy, but works fine.
This is the most popular one: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3590
Thank you.

"people in ny have a general idea of how to drive. one of the pedals goes forward the other one prevents you from dying"
Once it's .flv what do I do?

Video downloader (as recommended in the previous post) is you best bet as it will download damn near anything that streams. Once you have the .flv file, VLC will play it but I usually have problem trying to fast forward using it so I use this player (or you can just use its codec and windows media player will play the .flv file).

You can use this java script and it puts a download as .mp4 link in the about the video box thing.
Just create a bookmark(preferably on the bookmark bar on FF) with that pasted in the location section.
Note: This is not mine, I do not take credit for it, I merely found it surfing the web and can't be arsed too look it up.
Code:
javascript:if%20(document.getElementById('download-youtube-video')==null%20&&%20!!(document.location.href.match(/http:\/\/[a-zA-Z\.]*youtube\.com\/watch/)))%20{var%20yt_mp4_path='http://www.youtube.com/get_video?fmt=18&video_id='+swfArgs['video_id']+'&t='+swfArgs['t'];%20var%20div_embed=document.getElementById('watch-embed-div');if(div_embed){var%20div_download=document.createElement('div');div_download.innerHTML='<br%20/>%20<span%20id=\'download-youtube-video\'><a%20href=\''+yt_mp4_path+'\'>Download%20as%20MP4</a>%20'+%20%20((navigator.userAgent.indexOf('Safari')!=-1)?'(control-click%20and%20select%20<i>Download%20linked%20file%20as</i>)':('(right-click%20and%20select%20<i>Save%20'+%20(navigator.appName=='Microsoft%20Internet%20Explorer'?'target':'link')%20+'%20as)</i>'))+'</span>';div_embed.appendChild(div_download);}}void(0);

I use VEOH TV
I use "Sothink Web Video Downloader for Firefox". It works on any site I was ever on, and its regularly updated. It comes with a flash player as well.
You get a small little icon in you firefox and the number of videos it tracked you opening. When you click it it opens a new window and you download it from there. It will keep the links to the files in the list until you remove them. This was you can download a video that you watched 3 days ago.
Most importantly it names the videos properly. Some downloaders name all videos as "get_video" or just a number like "3428957628".
