What is all the fuss about? Vanilla has always been used to refer to something without "extras". However, it might not be used as much outside English (or perhaps the US). Here are a couple of definitions from Merriam Webster dictionary that apply:

vanilla: lacking distinction :PLAIN, ORDINARY
plain-vanilla: lacking special features or qualities :BASIC
