So I tried plehing TF2 just now and right after the first loading screen (after the Valve logo, the first screen), it CTD's. I restarted my computer, verified the game's files and defragged it. Still it CTDs. This doesn't happen with DoD, CS, or any other Sauce engine game.

Go to Steam Games, right click on TF2, Set Launch Options.  Add "-novid" to the line there.  This disables the video.  Not sure if it'll help but it's worth a shot.

Try deleting your tf2_playerstats.dmx file. It's in Steamapps/Team Fortress 2/tf

Make a copy of it first. Deleting it won't lose any of your achievements or stats, however it will reset all the 'counters' in unachieved achievements. Try making a copy, deleting it, and then starting the game up. If it crashes again just copy it back.

I read on the Steam forums that the fix to all this post-Heavy Update crashing was deleting playerstats file. It's very widespread.

Mine doesn't crash on startup, but it has crashed a few times while playing Arena. I'm hoping Valve will release a fix soon.

I actually didn't lose any achievement counts. All my stuff is still there.

Oh that's odd, thought you would lose it.  All good then.
