"California on Friday became the first state to ban trans fats from restaurant food, following several cities and major fast-food chains in erasing the notorious artery-clogger from menus.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation that will ban restaurants and other retail food establishments from using oil, margarine and shortening containing trans fats.

In a statement, Schwarzenegger noted that consuming trans fat is linked to coronary heart disease."

Big Brother is approaching fast. Just wait it is going to get so much worse when Obama is president. With a socialist health care system the government will all the more reason to tell you how to live your life.

If you don't understand the severity of this than you are a bit naive. It starts with things like smoking bans and then these kind of bans and it will eventually tumble into the government telling you when you can take a shit.

Trans fats are shit. Would you people complain if the city banned lead in the tap water?

Yes it's wiki but it's got various citations.

Although trans fat itself doesn't really kill. Heart disease does... it's just exacerbated by trans fats it would seem. Besides, trans-fatty foods usually taste worse than their natural counterparts.

edit: Isn't its economy strong enough for it to be its own country?

I think this is an indirect way to hurt the people that want to run their diesel cars on vegetable/fish oil as well.

goddamnit. I'm actually starting to get disappointed with a lot of things in Cali.

Does this ban affect fast-food chains, or all restaurants? If it only affects chains, I don't really give a damn, especially since most of them try to at least make it seem like their stuff is healthy anyway. But if it effects regular sit-down restaraunts that's a bit over-the-top imo.

An individual should be free to live how they wish. If they want to consume unhealthy foods, smoke unhealthy substances, or drink unhealthy beverages, what right do you have to stop them? How can you justify controlling someone's actions that has no effect on you?

Isn't it the government's job to aid its citizens a la social contract? No effect on you? So second hand smoke doesn't affect other people other than the person putting the cigarette in his/her mouth? So idiots drinking and driving don't affect other people on the road? In your own damn home is one thing and while I do agree that banning fatty foods and other unhealthy foods/drinks is a bit over the top, there is a point where someone/something has to step in and determine what's the best for ALL citizens, not just one individual.

No one is forcing you to breathe second hand smoke. I do agree that drinking and driving affects others on the road. But basically I'm really fucking fed up with all these stupid fucking laws restricting what you can and cant do. Its getting to a very ridiculous level.

The sky is falling right now, look at the picture!

New York banned trans-fats I believe, where were the unrelated Socialist/Obama connections then?

Lot's of dangerous and obviously detrimental food products have been removed from the food supply, how's this different? Tell me because I'd love to know.

That's pretty hard when you're sitting on the bus/at a restaurant/on a train etc. and someone is smoking by you.

Well if everyone wasn't getting so damn fat this wouldn't even be an issue.

I bet none of you even know the differences in the tastes between fats. You just want something to complain about.

Agreed. If people can't control themselves then these types of things are the only solution. Fat asses. Go make your own hospitals for your fat ass issues if you want to live your fat ass lifestyle, so you don't bother others

The government controlling people isn't a solution. Stupid that they think they get to control even people's diets.

Not saying that "we" are. But giving the government control over that is a step in the wrong direction. Let those people waste away because they're so fat they can't move if thats what they want to do, letting the government control what you eat is dangerous.

Banning trans fats is fine, provided it's not a blanket ban and is applied with a little common sense. You get trans fats in milk and banning that would just be stupid. Banning artificial trans fats that occur in nasty hydrogenated crap is a good idea. Non-hydrogenated oils are available for everything hydrogenated oils can do and having your food prepared in a healthier and tastier way can only be a good thing.

Other more direct and explicit bans that have gone on in the US regarding food (like this) have outraged me, but this is obviously a good thing. Regulation of what goes into what we eat and drink is not anything resembling a big brother state - it is a good thing which means we get better quality products.

There can be no freedom without trans fats, that is blatantly obvious!
