Yes but that is down to the size of the servers and the way network communication and data packaging happens, it does have the benefit of obviously not needing such precise calculations like an FPS game but with the correct packaging and calculation methods you can massively reduce the amount of traffic, one of my mates had to do exactly that in our 2nd year grp project, had to explore methods of RMI or java.net to send data over the network without any lag in 0.001 of a second, doesn't seem that amazing.
That's besides the point that if 256 players didn't already work in prototypes they wouldn't be announcing this game at all.
