Ok, Sony has announced its exclusive for PS3 game MAG or Massive Action Game, which will let you play online in battles up to 256 players, yes, 256 on the same server.  What do you think of this?  It sounds awesome, but laggy too.

I gotta say, 256 players on the same server is a MAGnitude of players unheard of in gaming, be it PC gaming or console gaming.

edit: Maybe in MMOs but those don't count for this argument.

If the servers are big enough it will be fine, that's the only thing that will cause lag, its all about how the RMI or whatever method the PS3 uses for network traffic works. If its efficient it will be completely fine, no laggier than any 64 player game.

Eg. WoW has thousands of players on each server, they just have bigger servers and good network communication.

Yes, true, but this is a FPS game.  It's the first time they make one for 256 players on the same server.

I have a feeling this game is going to be doing alot of the calculations and data packaging on the server side to lessen the stress on individual players connections.

Yes but that is down to the size of the servers and the way network communication and data packaging happens, it does have the benefit of obviously not needing such precise calculations like an FPS game but with the correct packaging and calculation methods you can massively reduce the amount of traffic, one of my mates had to do exactly that in our 2nd year grp project, had to explore methods of RMI or java.net to send data over the network without any lag in 0.001 of a second, doesn't seem that amazing.

That's besides the point that if 256 players didn't already work in prototypes they wouldn't be announcing this game at all.

Reminds me of that game PlanetSide, which Sony made, so the two games really sound similiar.  In PlanetSide I think you could have a squad of up to ten people but I'm not sure about player numbers in one world or server.

I've never even seen a Zipper Interactive before today, dunno if I can trust them. Not saying it'll 100% fail

I'm expecting slightly better than PS2 graphics. if it's not; it'll be easily forgettable, imo. Unless it ends up like OFP
