A WU is a collection of files, located in a work directory created by the client, with data about atoms, bonds, temperature and likely even more parameters.
Basically, your PC finishes a WU then sends it back to the FAH server. Your account is awarded the appropriate number of points and then the server gives you another WU. And so on and so on.
