What Constitutes Racism In The Modern World?

I would like to begin this with a little preamble. This not a retaliatory thread, although it follows on from topics covered in other threads, and although I am using quotes by my good friend Thorax it is not designed as a specific attack on him himself. Many posters have voiced similar attitudes and opinions to him on this subject i.e. that prejudices do not equate to racism. At least Thorax is brave enough to admit that the definition of the two are not a million miles away; but what does constitute racism in that case? Posters like usmarine have implied that to be a racist you have to be a card carrying KKK member or engage in overt verbal or physical attacks on ethnic groups, what do you have to do to be a racist these days?

An example of one person who believes he is prejudiced but not racist...

However, I am sitting here thinking to myself, what makes you so self conceited that you think any of these people need you to stand up for them or be a moral authority on anything?

All of the things I've stated I believe to be true.  Sue me.    Some of these things are flat out undeniable.  Why IS black crime so high in proportion to population?  Why only blacks and not say, latino or asians?  Perhaps you should take a drive to Holdenville, Oklahoma and all the surrounding towns and tell me why these cities are so run-down and under kept despite receiving more government aid for merely being Native American than other cities?  On another note, show me a black serial killer with an outstandingly high IQ?  Perhaps blacks are prone to petty crime and whites are prone to commit more hideous crimes?  If stating a blatant observation is racist, well then YA CAUGHT ME RED HANDED SHERIFF! 

Either way, just goes to show what an attention whore you are when you have to start a whole new thread to reply to one post made on the rarely viewed 3rd page about Muslims that you so quaintly derailed.

There is a way to make the remarks in question less racially sensitive. The poster of such words would just have to say "in my experience" or "the _insert category here_ that I know are..." in order to speak from experience and not generalizations.

But you have said you don't like Native Americans because your experience of them time and time again has reinforced your opinions about their race, no? For years in the high school I went to there was only one black person and he was an absolute fucking wanker...the only representative of his race for miles and miles and probably the worst possible 'ambassador'. I could have taken this experience and decided ALL black people were absolute wankers, it's the same logic you advocate. Instead I chose not to apply my experience of any one sample group and to accept each individual on their own merits.

I think I've stood by my comments quite adamantly here, there is a difference between defending your point of view and being a crybaby.  Defenders use points and evidence to back up their claims, crybabies troll threads and throw in poorly written one liners of hate to people who disagree with someone of their race.

Well, he used to be quite respectable while he was in the military and posted here and as a matter of fact we were very friendly towards each other, but it would seem as of lately he's turned into a run of the mill, mindless forum troll.

Also, I've had many face to face conversations and debates on this subject with people of all nationalities and ethnic groups.  The tend to be rather civil and informative.  I highly doubt that it would be the case with Slinger if he resembles anything in real life as to how he acts on the forum.  Just because he's an ex-soldier doesn't mean he's some ass kicking god of the neatherealms either, if that was the angle your shooting for.

Braddock surely you can see that he is telling his side and sharing his experience. He is not advocating discrimination or violence. I disagree with a lot of what he has said on the subject, but I can understand why people come to these conclusions. It's easy to say racist.. it's much tougher to ask the question "But why?". If a society is ever really going to work through those barriers it must be willing to face those questions without immediately shutting them down with the your a racist (and therefor unpopular) line.

I think it really depends on how racism is defined. I mean, I bet most of us look at someone and associate certain behaviors with the color of their skin. When I watch cops and I see some hillbilly toothless wonder get arrested for hitting his wife and you can see his pickup with a confederate flag in the background, I thnk white trash. When I see 16 people in line at Kentucky Fried Chicken and fourteen of those people are black, I chuckle. When I go to Foxwoods Casino on the weekends I can't help but notice 80% of the patrons are Asian. I will be at Wal-Mart and see a Puerto Rican woman with a carriage full of Goya. Everyone is Irish on St Patricks day. Who hasn't told a Polish joke?   I think these are the things that identify us as cultures and we should just be proud we are unique. My problem is with the people who have malcontent and hatrid because of a skin color. Those are the poeple who are shallow and empty inside
