do you have kids now ken? wondering what would even strong-arm a grown man into watching a musical fronted by a disney teen star. (no shade, genuine question.)

i finally got around to seeing ‘evil does not exist’. i’ll give it a 6.5 out of 10. like the director’s last work (‘drive my car’, which was better but not by much), the soundtrack work by eiko ishibashi is far and away the best thing about it. very striking choice of OST which gives the films an indelible quality.
No, GF wanted me to watch it.

Children of Men: 6.5/10. I liked the premise but thought it was a little too shallow.

Snowpiercer: solid 7/10, maybe a little higher. I was surprised at the quality of the storytelling in this. It's one of those dystopian films that is so over the top in it's premise yet still finds ways to subtly reinforce the them throughout the movie. It gives you little morsels to keep you curious. I liked it a lot.

i would swap those ratings around. children of men has better cinematography, and snowpiercer – like all joon-ho's work – deals with its premises in an incredibly dunderheaded and shallow way. you basically get bludgeoned half to death with the 'point' of his movies. there's something very bombastic, melodramatic even, in that era of mainstream korean film that always strikes me as tonally 'off'.
