Might have been a three, but the way they ended it, endorsing Hollywood-styled, shallow, pointless, greedy, corporate life-styles moved it down to a 2.

I mean, the entire film built up to everything going wrong for the twat played by the guy who played a very similar twat in the Hangover (also trash) because his greed/lifestyle-in-general was going to far, but then the fucking twist was that everything works out and he gets to live oh so happily ever after day trading himself to riches, and then it looks like he'll become president as well.

What utter shite. Honestly cannot think of a worse film. At least the Hangover had Mike Tyson.

But yeah, serves me right for watching something with Bradley Cooper in it.

anything below a 5-score and it just depends really on how much offense the film personally caused you

Firing a shot into the utter dark, I'd say that more films are on average critically rated at above 5 than under, so the true average would likely fall somewhere between 6.5 and 7. This is the reason I use 7 as a passable average so often and not 5. Not because I'm calling the movie especially praiseworthy, but that it works as a film. Also, being the average rating used, many movies fall into its fold.

Upon rewatches, my opinion generally deteriorates. For instance, once you get past the graphics and superb environment in Avatar, its average plot seems even more monotonous, even if you've already been aware of it before, and fails to carry the film in a meaningful way. Because of it, I think I've gone from an 8 (above average) to the 7. Reviews are still subjective, results either subject to a weighted formula or whim. If there was an established scientific way to specifically measure the quality of a film, there'd be far less critical debate about the qualities of cinema. If you want to call a 5 average, that's up to you and your personal scale.

And for the record, I liked Limitless. I thought it should have gone longer, so you have Cooper vs DeNiro trying to run for Pres or take over the world. If that was offered as the sequel I would watch it.

You just have to get past Cooper as a shit actor.

it gets less good as you watch it more. it's a good film technique-wise, aronofsky is a great director. but it is a bit much sometimes. just over the top and melodramatic, in the bad way. some of it is a bit pretentious as well - the sort of stuff that would probably appeal to a hip late-teen. drugs maaan.

worst fucking movie ever made. a horrible attempt at American Pie basically. things just made no sense. It almost deserves a 10/10 just for being so fucking awful.

Never heard of that film, so I looked it up.  It has Tania Raymonde so she must have been the only thing worth looking at

let's just say there's a scene where one of the "villains" jacks off into an ice cube tray and freezes it. this same villain also makes a paper maiche mold of his wang.

It also has Rumer Willis in it, who combined with her terrible acting skills, has one of the most fucked up shaped faces of all time.

The Rum Diary

rum/10 everything thing you like about H.S. Thompson - graphic sex, LSD, a sea of alcohol, and

how a journalist person finds his voice. J. Depp in his most commanding role to date - the sole applicant to a fish wrap in Puerto Rico. an erstwhile [sic] N.Y. Times reporter, embroiled in the fight of both a career and a tryst.

and,

the Bacardi distillery.

Didn't think it was as good as reviews and the imdb score suggest, it was different, and there are some distant resemblances to Taxi Driver. It provided solid entertainment, with little depth, and it seemed to just be sub-plot after sub-plot, I thought the movie started out really well but got worse and more predictable as it went on. Cool soundtrack though. Apart from the 80's (?) theme and music, I didn't see anything outstanding to differentiate it from your typical solid Hollywood crime/thriller with guns and a little romance on the side.

Probably one of the best overall movies made ever, in my opinion. There is only about 30 seconds of Mel Brooks-esque comedy that I would remove to make this a solid 10. It seems to get better each time I watch it.

The Raid - 10/10. Quite possibly the best action movie ever. It is Indonesian so you will have to read subtitles the whole movie, but there isn't much talking.

Movie has really intense violence, definitely not for the faint of heart.

two posts in a row declaring very average movies to be "the best films of all time". some critical overlap here methinks.

Secondhand Lions was decent, but completely forgettable for me. I don't think I ever watched it a second time, and it flushed itself out of my memory until it was mentioned here.
