But all the adults were Shrek Scottish. I mean the answer why the kid is American is obvious: To appeal to American kids. But that's a pretty crappy reason.
Since it's so obviously a stylized animated film, the voices didn't really bother me all that much. I wouldn't have cared if he sounded French, it was just to (along with diminutive stature) set him apart from the herd. Having elements taken from other movies or being designed to appeal for kids also didn't bother me. Dwelling on it too much is kind of overanalyzing the thing. The script was tight, the movie avoided unnecessary padding and it didn't really try to politically editorialize it at the expense of enjoyability.

I'd rather sit through this again than one of the countless cheekily patronizing films released this year. One of the few instances where I'm pretty much in alignment with critic opinion.

Kids film elements always bother me. I watched Despicable Me on Saturday and it also has good reviews but I didn't enjoy it much because the way the characters were acting and the dialogue all screamed "we're aiming this at kids".

It's the little things they do and they bother me enough to make me not like the film. Toy Story 3 had none of that.

Wait a minute, are you trying to say that

is actually a kids movie?!

I know its a kids movie but it doesn't have to be so irritating and make 'kids film' jokes all the time. It's really hard to explain what I mean. I don't really know how to define what irritates me about these films but something to do with the dialogue just annoys me. Films from my childhood like Aladin never had any of those annoying 'kids film' traits (although what it does have is a bunch of pop culture references which really spoil it), and yet nearly all modern ones do. The dialogue and jokes they make.. I don't even know specifically what it is myself. It's not just the dialogue as well. In DM I could tell the little yellow guys were meant to be really funny to kids but they could've made it less obvious that they were trying so hard to make kids laugh. If you get me. I dunno. Try and be subtle. In How to Train Your Dragon, the dialogue would be going as normal but then there's be a "kids film line" and it would spoil the whole scene.

Another thing about Despicable Me was that the trailer absolutely ruined it. Trailers often spoil the jokes and 'wow' moments in films but the DM trailer had literally every single funny scene in it. It was a pretty funny film but i'd seen it all before. And since until recently I went to the cinema a lot, I had to sit through a lot of trailers so I couldn't help it. In fact the part I laughed at the most was right at the beginning when he Spoiler (highlight to read):
Parked his massive car simply because it wasn't in the trailer. It was a simple bit of physical humour but it did it well. I think all the physical humour with the yellow guys was done pretty poorly in comparison. The kids in the cinema laughed at them every time though so I guess they did their job. Seeing the Spoiler (highlight to read):
yellow guy in space when he took off in his rocket made me laugh too. Running jokes are good if they're not overused.

It was an ok film but it could've been better. I liked the design of his plane. It was shaped like a pointy metal shoe.

I know they're primarily kids films and they have to cater for kids, but they should put effort in to make it not at the expense of everyone else.

That's a hell of an argument, a good one though. Are you reffering to when a corny kid joke or silly kid thing happens? Like when the characters say something immature kids find funny but adults find throws the sceneoff?

The American: 6.5/10  - nothing memorable really, just some nice Italian scenery.

The Damned United: 6.5/10 - kinda funny at times

The Ipcress File: 7/10 - A classic, granted it may have aged somewhat for contemporary audiences

Something like that yeah. But it doesn't even have to be a bad joke (although that's the main problem), it can just be some dialogue that one character says to another and it ruins the whole scene. I've been noticing it happening an increasing amount lately and I find it really grating.

Another thing that really bothers me (I mentioned it up there) is pop culture references in otherwise brilliant films. Film makers really really need to stop adding these all over the place. I mentioned Aladdin up there, and it's a brilliant film. Probably my favourite Disney one. But then right in the middle of this old, other wordly universe the genie does an impression of someone on tv or a 90s catch phrase or something stupid like that and thats it, scene ruined. Song ruined. Whatever was going on, the illusion is lost for the sake of a cheap laugh 10 years ago. Shrek is another one. Anyone watched it lately? It's a really good and original film.

But then there's a scene referencing wrestling for goodness sake and a scene referencing The Matrix as well, among many others. And once again the enjoyment is instantly ruined. I wish these film makers would stop spoiling good films with references made for easy and quick laughs. They never EVER age well and make future viewings really awkward to watch.

Hilarious comedy - I am absolutely amazed by Emma Stone, she definitely needs to be in more movies.

Despicable Me is without a doubt a kid-oriented film, but it still had its good moments if you didn't try to take it seriously. But I didn't really find anything overtly kiddy about the dialog in HtTYD. The book it's loosely based on is absolutely meant for young children, but they evolved the film into something watchable by both adults and kids. Everything seems to be in good taste; no gory violence, sexual innuendos or potty humor. Also, no pop culture references that are immediately obvious (at least to me). It's one of the things that lets me rewatch films like it, Beauty & the Beast and Lion King again and again over the years while other films like Shrek and Aladdin, while good, fall by the wayside. That isn't to say it's impossible to pull off (Emperor's New Groove), especially if you make it [pop culture] a subtle-but-relevant centerpiece.

So yeah, back to my point. I can't really figure out what the problem is with HtTYD. Can you give me an offending dialog example?

worth watching. the plot was very shallow though, expected something a bit more engaging from it.

p.s. had to turn the subtitles on - can't catch a word of that british/irish/scottish speech for the life of me.

There was one point when Hiccup was in the ring, and Astrid had just stunned the dragon with the shield, and she said a corny line. Maybe it wasn't corny, but it seemed to make the scene all akward and such.

Astrid wrote:

"Don't you take this seriously? Our parents war is about to come OUR war"
I may be a little off but it did awkwardize the scene. And I think there was something after that.

In my opinion it was better than the first one, however I didn't really like the ending and at points the "scary shit moving" was completely predictable. However, it was fairly funny as two of my mates was high off their tits, which made for interesting reactions
The movie definitely scores points with my as the characters were no where near as fucking annoying as the original.
