will consider OC if this build goes well.

I have one last major concern.

i am currently using a 250GB samsung 8MB buffer HD.

Now on that HD is all my games, software, work etc and I have Windows XP 32-Bit OEM installed on that.
I want to keep this 250GB hard-drive and want to use at as my main/second HD on this new build to save the trouble of transferring my stuff, using the 500GB as a second/first drive.

Now since i have Windows XP 32-bit OEM on that how can i install Vista 64-bit on it without re-formatting it etc???

can it be done??
Install Windows on the new HD, then, when that's done, you plug in the new one. It is, however, recommended to format the drive, to get rid of all the space Windows uses, which could be well over 10GB.
so install vista on the 500gb, then plug the 250GB in when formatted???

is there a way of backing up software as i have one or 2 cracked applications and don't have the installations to it on my current drive?

i am confused on this as i want t keep this HD

That is correct - it is an Upgrade, not OEM.

How they work this has varied from product to product and I've not seen a Vista Upgrade install, so I'm not sure which of these it will be, but you will either have to enter a valid XP serial-key, or it will scan your HDD looking for a valid XP install, or will check for a valid XP install CD, or just possibly, you may have to run it from a valid XP install to get it to install.

One of the first three is most likely, and as long as you do have a valid copy of XP you'll be able to get it installed somehow.

It may also recognise other OS versions as valid to upgrade from.

If you mean what I think you mean (and I'm pretty sure you do) - no - even with an upgrade, I believe, you will have to re-install ALL apps, etc.

this from the Microsoft site

"Should I upgrade or perform a clean installation?

Upgrade if you want to keep your files, settings, and programs from your current version of Windows.

Perform a clean installation to install Windows on a specific drive or partition (this replaces the information on the drive or partition you use for the installation), or to set up a multiboot system on your computer. For more information about setting up a multiboot system, see Install more than one operating system (multiboot).

For detailed information about installing and upgrading 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows, go to Installation choices for Windows Vista (32-bit) or Installation choices for Windows Vista (64-bit) online. "

so if i do an upgrade it should keep my applications, but will back up my work.

what i mean by OEM is this, i bought my current P.C from staples. I currently have XP 32-bit OEM on my P.C. The OEM here means that i can upgrade my components but not my motherboard because XP is tied it down. As the mobo is sort of the licence holder, not the individual. The only time the mobo can be changed is for the same make and model, if anything happens to the existing one

so if i do an upgrade would it not still remain an OEM???

Ah, okay, that does indeed suggest if you do an upgrade, it'll keep your programs... Bah, bloody Microsoft - forever changing the way things work - last time I did a Windows upgrade it meant reinstalling everything (granted, I think that was like 98->2K or summat like that).

Oooh. Good question. You're correct about how OEM works (tied to mobo), but would the install of windows still class as 'OEM' after an upgrade? <*shrug*>

I would say the ABIT IP35, but you'd need a 65nm CPU to flash the newest bios to it, they do not tend to support 45nm by default.

Do not get P31 chipset (bad for overclocking which is a must with E7200) And do not get ASRock at least. If you think you can stretch it, this is a sure bet: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/143228

I also can't say anything bad about my Asus P5N-E Sli board, but some others might.

thanks for that, does the mobo you suggest support both 45nm and 65nm????

seems a good bard, supports fbs 1600, quad core would be good on this (when i get the cash/price drop   )

That is a great board, good support for processors, and great overclockability.

top board, is future proof, takes 8GB ram. That with quad core, with the 8800GT, its then a beast. I am very sure this will handle windows 7 with ease, but will need a new monitor, as everyone will( touch screen)

but the total price is now £370.69, still good with that, and managed to fit the 8800GT in this, check page 4 for the build
