So, my trusty 7900GT is on it's way out, after 2 years of active service. It's started artefacting like hell on CoD4 and barely anything is playable. Even writing this now, little green dots have speckled across my screen. It's only like 5 or 6, but annoying. CRT monitor as well.

Annnnyway, cutting it to the chase. I'm wanting another nVidia card, however.... I'm happy to accept suggestions from the other side of the fence. The last time i looked at graphics cards the 8800GTS G92 was pretty much laughing at every other card. Is this still the case?

I'm wanting the best price/performance ratio, as this thing has got to last me 3/4 years of uni. As, at uni, I will be skint. So lay it out for me. What's the best performer per unit cost?

Wait a bit for ATi's new 4 Series.

Then Buy a new monitor.

Erm, for best Performance/Cost I would say the 8800GT

Why pay $160 for an 8800GT, when you can get 9800GTX speeds for $175, with a 4850?
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Of those, the 4850. I'd push to a 4870 though if possible.

The 4850 destroys the 8800gt

If you got $200 - 4850.

If you got $300 - 4870.

Crysis one of few games that comes out slightly ahead of the 9800gtx.

Can you link me to that 4870 review?

It doesn't destroy the 9800GTX, but its equal or better, at WAY less price.

No, the 9800gtx prices are all dropping to the same price as the 4850. I've been watching newegg today, and eVGA was the first to do it, and now xfx and some of the others are just now getting around to dropping their prices.

That said, the 4850 is the way to go.

4850 > 9800 GTX

Single Slot
Less Heat Produced
Less Power Needed
Higher Peformance
Only 1 6-pin required
Crossfire scales better than SLI
MUCH CHEAPER
CrossFireX means Crossfire with other cards, not just other 4850s

I think the 4850 wins

I agree with you 100%. But it's not much cheaper, maybe 20-30 dollars.
