My computer at the moment is pretty much a pile of shite.

Pentium D 2.8ghz
1gb DDR2 ram
7300SE

Thats basically it.

There's a strong chance ill be getting about £270 late this month, and i want to make my computer fit for uni.

What i know i want:

New motherboard (one that can take 4x512mb ram sticks)

Aside from that, i have no idea how far my money will go, i'd like a new processor and GPU, but like i said i have no idea how much all this is.

So my challenge, sort me out.

I'm not arsed about ultra high end performance, i mainly use my 360 for gaming. Although i would like this one to be able to handle new games - but not necessarily at "all high" settings.

Are you an 'gradual upgrade' or 'buy a bunch of stuff' type of guy?

(i.e. would it be worth you having a less cheap mobo that offered upgradability?)

And I take it you're planning to use your current DDR2 RAM?

Yeh i'll use my current ram (i've aquired about 3gb in 512 sticks - but i think one of the sticks is fucked)

And regards to the what kind of upgrader am i question - i have no idea, i've never bought anything for my PC.

I want it to still be good(ish) in a years time, preferably more.

Is it just for uni stuff or are you going to be using it for more elaborate tasks, i.e gaming etc.

Because you're coming from a 2.8GHz Pentium, you'll need a decent speed cpu - otherwise it's going to feel slow....

OK... well, this is a good but not too expensive mobo, decent speed dual-core, and reasonable GPU:

A mixture, the odd game and so on would be nice.

So what is it you need.

CPU
GPU
Mobo ?

Mobo ~ Gigabyte P35 DS3L
CPU ~ Intel E8200/8400
GPU ~ ATi 3850 (assuming they take a price hit when the 4 series come out, which they should)

In the UK I think that would total, £260ish.

Do you need a power supply?

No idea.

output is 115w, but it says it can hit 250w.

Yes, you're going to need a new PSU lol

Hmmm, well, like I said, the GPU I suggested should go down in price so that will free up some cash for a power supply.  If not I suppose you could go down to something else, like you say you usually use the 360.  If the 3850 looses say £30 off its current price, £40-50 will get you a nice branded PSU.

Also, prices will go down, like Bell said about the 3850, it will drop around 30 pound, so you'll be ok.

Ooo wait a minute, the 3850 only costs that much now :\  Maybe £30 is a bit ambitious, it will go down though almost certainly.  I hope your case has reasonable cooling though cause it can get hot.

It depends when you're buying. Prices will fall for sure. I just did this quickly so have a look.

Try the P31 DS3L, take £20 off the price of the mobo easy.  It looses some of the features the P35 has that u prolly wont use.

Aries_37 suggestion is sweet. The CPU is too slow though, but he already included  an aftermarket cooler. And it can hit 3Ghz easily.
