Why didn't you just disable SLI? Then you essentially have a single GTX280.

8800GTS costs about same, its slower. 9800GTX is available like shit in decent price. HD 4850 costs roughly 40% more than I paid of this 8800, performance being very close. HD 4870... looses too much value till GT300 and I hardly need more than 8800GTX performance.
edit: and to be clear I could afford HD 4870 X2 CFX, but that again would have chance of ms issues and overall its dumb to put 500€ on dx10 hardware anymore if you don't need some fucky ass super fast card RIGHT NOW.
