Did the mod. It doesn't leap out at me, but I can definitely hear more clarity in the music.

edit: that's using my dac/amp. Think I'll go run it off the stereo...

And I think I'll still try get the Tubemagic A1 amp

edit 2: ok, this is really growing on me. More authority in the bass, definitely more clarity in the mids and highs. The sound doesn't seem so veiled now - to an extent they sound like new headphones..

Not really, no.

I find that there's something wrong with a sub-woofer, yes. Bass too is stereophonic, even though it's not always very easy to sense the directionality of it. I much prefer having two (or more, in a multi-channel system) good speakers that also do the job that a sub-woofer would, or at least having two sub-woofers in the system.

For instance, it's very clear if an explosion is coming from the right or the left in my entertainment system, just by feeling which side of you is rumbling more.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I bought a 1TB WD Green for storage as the WD Raptor died but that was entirely my fault as I moved the PC while it was on.

that's why the sub is placed front and center.  the mid frequencies from the front left and right will give the sound direction.  only the very low, house shaking frequencies will be diffuse.  and most sub-heavy explosions are happening on screen, using the front soundstage.

That only works if you've got your sub-woofer crossed very low - around 40Hz at most, I'd say. Additionally, to be able to do that, you need to have rather low-riding front speakers already, so the point of a sub-woofer often becomes arguably moot in such a situation. It also doesn't address the issue of phase cancellation when mixing together X amount of channels into mono; some music I've heard depends heavily on phase-shifting low frequencies between channels for effect, and such an effect would be completely destroyed by doing them in mono.

As I did just up the page. But still, I understand the 595's a little better than soundstage modded 555's.

Anyway, awesome headphones

I've been set back a little on my quest for that Tubemagic A1 headphone amp. The store who I was going to ask to import it will be closed for 2 1/2 more weeks while they attend a trade conference in LA.
