In 1985/6 a worldwide moratorium on whaling was put in place, banning all whaling. Norway, however, "took out a reservation", meaning that they could continue by IWC rules to legally hunt North Atlantic minke whales and, in 1993 and 1994, they killed several hundred. This has caused great dismay in other countries, including the U.K., who have officially objected to this hunt. In UK waters it is illegal to intentionally kill, injure, capture or harass any species of whale or dolphin. However, there is little in international law that can be done about hunting, except control of exports which is covered by CITES (the Convention for International Trade in Endangered Species). This is important because the main consumers of whale meat are still the Japanese and, if Norway could legally export whale meat to Japan, this might further promote whaling. In 1993 a shipment of whale meat, labelled as "shrimp", was discovered at Oslo airport in Norway, on route to Asia.

Why does Norway think that it's ok for them to hunt whales?
Because it tastes good.

To clarify, I am not against legal hunting, be it whales or rabbits, in any way. I am just against the attitude seen in Jens' post.

Well that is bullshit. How could any human put a value on an animal, or anything else that is living. Saying "it's just a fucking animal" is ignorant and stupid. I say you really cannot value any life of any creature over some else's. Yes, I know, people are on top of the food chain, true, but our life is still not worth a dime more that an animal's.

A human is a human, but still an animal.

You are an animal that was born in a hospital.

My point is not to look like an activist. I am not against whale hunting when it is not poaching, but I absolutely hate when people somehow think that animals are just fucking animals. To me their life is just as valuable as ours.
As a matter of fact I do hunt, and fish, but I respect the animal I kill, and use it for food. Nothing wrong with that.

No seriously, I really don't care how we kill our seals, whales, pigs, sheep, whatever. The more important part of the food subject, is spreading it around to fellow humans. Here we are, complaining about someone killing an animal that isn't endangered at all, while there are millions of people in the world who don't even have enough food. Jesus fuck:

1. It's a fucking animal
2. It's not endangered
3. See point 1.
At point 1 there are shitload of people in the world that i rather let die then a innocent animal.
Vegetarian?

If not, your argument fucking fails. All your meat and steaks come from innocent animals.

How the fuck is a whale more innocent than a cow?
True, also sorry if i come over as some PETA member.
I myself also don't really care if people hunt whale if it's not the endangered species ones (and not to cruel methods).

My point was just more that we praise humankind maybe a a bit to much, i always find it weird when i see something in the news ''guy beats his dog to death'' and only gets a couple of months, but when it would be a kid he would get lifetime or deaths sentence, i mean if your sick enough to beat a animal to death with a stick what's stopping you to kill a human being.

Umm maybe because we have the intelligence, the ability, and the compassion to NOT HAVE TO.

Dark Ages called, they want their senselessness back...

Fact is, humans have the full ability to live a healthy life without ever killing an animal.  We choose to, through laziness, taste of meat, and other reasons.  There is no justification of food chain anymore.  The same intelligence that gave us the ability to use a weapon to kill an animal, is the same intelligence that later makes us able to survive without having to do so.

edit.  I eat meat, free range, organic, and humanely slaughtered.  Everytime I do eat it, I thank the animal for giving it's life for me to live so well.  I personally believe the Native Americans had a few things really right...

You do realise that if every carnivoureous or omnivoureous species thought like that the whole concept of food chain wouldn't exist?

There always used to be dolphin in canned tuna. The fishermen caught the in their nets accidentally and just minced them through as they died anyway. It was banned, dolphins were better avoided and most canned tuna brands are now dolphin free. I remember canned tuna labels explicitly stating 'dolphin free'.

Fine then, eat your whales, breed them youself then. You want to eat whale then go do it. We breed chikens and cows because they are "cheap" and "easy" but nothing is easy or cheap to look after properly. Go into a chicken "farm" and see how they are kept.

I'm not saying don't.  I'm just saying that we don't HAVE to and using the food chain as justification is pointless.  We have evolved beyond the earth's food chain.  We aren't even in the same category anymore as animals who hunt and kill to live.

I'm not against eating meat, I merely joined the conversation once it turned to using the food chain as evidence that it's ok to slaughter animals.  If we could just admit we do it out of selfishness, it would be much easier on my ears.

Eat meat, do what you want.  I just wanted to show that we don't have to...

Wrong, the chance of a tiger attacking you is very high, especially when near or around their young. The chance of a tiger eating you is very rare, which is not my point.
