Because just like Islam, Christianity conquered countries (yes even Europe) through force or trickery. I know it's hard to beleive that the only reason you're part of a religion is because your ancestors were most likely forced. But that's how it is. Especially for Islam. Apart from the Arabs most other people are Muslim because they were forced...

You talk about preserving whatever you have, when Christianity/Islam isn't even what you are (for most people here)

Hell the only reason Christianity rose to prominence in Rome was because somehow a Christian became ruler and then shut down/raped the ancestral Roman Religion. And because the Romans were kind enough eventually to not completely obliterate Christianity, is the only reason it survived. Even though Christianity went on to not return the favour to the Roman Religion.

You criticize others for something your own country is just as guilty of. That's where.

I'm an atheist and I don't find someone urinating on the bible, farting on Buddhist scriptures, shooting at the Quran or shitting on the Torah in the least bit enjoyable. It's playground nonsense - not what one would expect of an adult. Your view on this really is quite moronic, uncultured, immature, vacuous, senseless and repugnant. Insulting people simply for the sake of insulting people is not clever, it's not big and it's not 'the grown up thing to do'.
It is not the act itself that impressed me, but the nature of the act. In that action, it is withholding the 'holiness' of the Quran and recognizing it as a mundane object. In the particular way that the soldier acted does not strike me as anything fantastic, if not "playground nonsense" as you put it well. I see no value in firing at a Quran particularly, but as a social statement, there is an interesting essence to it that intrigues me. It is well known that I am anti-religious, and that I view Islam as a repulsive, violent religion. Functionally, this act is definitely misguided, as I have clearly stated, for practical reasons of the situation; however, it is not necessarily wrong if viewed within the single context of a man firing at a book.

Perhaps I wrote too quickly in my initial post that did not fully explain my position, but I somehow doubt that even this will clear it up. We will likely still disagree at the day's end. I never thought that I would find myself at the end of one of CamPoe's tirades, but that is one particularly vicious statement you have made. Fuck you too, buddy.
My comment was directed at the perpetrator of the act - the American soldier in this case. I wouldn't agree with your assertion that the act is 'impressive'. It is actually quite an easy act to perform.

Well, it seems to me that you have a bunch of nations whom oppress their women, their poor.  You have a bunch of nations who make it a crime punishable by death to convert from Islam to another religion.  You have a bunch of nations who still have public executions by various forms.  You have a bunch of nations who would rather let a bunch of school girls burn to death than risk having them be tainted or spoiled by the men of their country (rampant pedophilia, or rampant irrational paranoia, your choice there).  You have a bunch of violent, backward people who support the use of bombs on busses and in school yards to promote political platforms.  You have a bunch of people who riot and kill over cartoons.  FRIGGIN CARTOONS.
Not much different from America really.
- The whole nation is totally beholden to the Christian nutjobs, zionists and the Israelis
- Oppressing women - just how much porn does america prodcue these days?
- Has an amazing number of people living in poverty for a developed nation
- Still has (almost) public executions - but not so many good ole white boys for some reason
- Violent, backward people who support bombing anyone, old men, women, children, if it helps their corporations make money.
- How many children have members of the US Catholic church abused over the years? - oh and not forgetting the mormons with their polygamy and marrying 15 year olds.

PS Duhbya just apologised.

I'm not even religious, but man, it hardly seems worth engaging someone who thinks american christians are  generally on the same plane as middle eastern muslims.

We don't have any roadsigns like this one, not even in the 'bible belt'

That road leads to Mecca.  Unless you plan to convert to Islam and circle the Kabaa 7 times what use is it for you to travel down there?  Masjid al-Haram and Mecca are not sightseeing spectacles.

It's not like aparthaid is implemented in Saudi, you dont have to show your papers at checkpoints and you wont have to sit on a different bench or drink from a different water fountain.  The cultural values of the of the host nation are to be respected if you can't accept that, don't go.

Um, this happened after the indigenous indians were practically wiped out right?
But I can't remember, was it before or after slavery ended - and when were blacks were allowed to vote?

I am not a part of any religion. So it's not hard for me to believe anything. As far as history I think I can hang with the best of them around here. If anyone wants to argue the progression in Islam (as advocated by their leaders) let me know.

Try again:
The Banu Qurayza surrendered and all the men, apart from a few who converted to Islam, were beheaded, while all the women and children were enslaved.

Do you really want to go there? You are comparing a piece of paper (They have full rights here believe it or not), to swinging by their necks in Iran under state orders (which of course doesn't have gays ).

Or perhaps the rights afforded to the innocent people in Guantanamo Bay?
This is under the orders of the pope? Cmon, You can do better than that.

Yeah, I knew there were even some Arabs that were forced to convert too, Muhammads first wars were to fight his own people so he could gain power. It's a terrible religion...

Point.

When you shoot people for a living, you may have a skewed sense of social etiquette..

Doesn't excuse, but it's a consideration.

It doesnt matter that people in the west dont get upset when someone burns a Bible or spits on a flag. What matter is that people in the middle east do get upset when Quran is desecrated.

Yeah, how does something like this get out? Did he post a video on the intertubes or something?

All it says is "he admitted it"

Nevermind, from the other topic:

The soldier was sent home by the US military after the Muslim holy book was found riddled with bullet holes at a shooting range by Iraqi police.
They found it.

yep but we are talking about how the westerners should act. If anyone here happens to find him self in the ME (business trip for example) he shouldnt burn the Quran just because he can burn a Bible back home.
