It wouldn't fuck up the environment totally, but it would fuck it up. Personally, they should do it. Just to stop being reliant on Mooj's - but what they (everyone) really should do is become less reliant on crude oil altogether. There's plenty of alternatives out there to fuel/lubricate our cars and power stations (and make plastics and other crude oil shit). The only thing I can't see is a viable alternative to fuel jet engines

Course it will never happen as long as the Oil Corporations are able to stop it.
What do you do for a living? Are you first hand in the industrial plastics industry, automotive, or farming? There are alternative plastic production methods, but they use corn or soy mostly. Now I don't need to mention the problem with that, however I can point out the enormous petroleum cost to produce the energy for synthesizing and producing plant based polymers. Even if we switched over to non-petrol based plastics, which we can't (sheer numbers game), we would end up using more oil to produce the plastics than we already do to make petrol plastics.

Secondly, for the automotive industry where are we going to get all of the fuel to make the switch to this already so easy alternative fuel/lubrication source you speak of. How will we mine/grow/crack this alternative source that you didn't even name? What fuel will drive the vehicles doing that. What power source will provide for the factories, for the infrastructure production. Finally, who is going to pay to switch over 700 million vehicles to work with this new alternative? Even if the fuel source was water, you'd need to mine tons of new metal to produce conversion filters, figure out how to crack water at incredible volumes, suck even more water from the environment, etc etc etc.

There is no easy answer, there isn't some magical alternative fuel that you may have heard rumor of on youtube. The real world runs on petroleum, enough said. And for those who constantly blame "liberals" for this problem, I'm sure you wouldn't like a brand spankin new oil refinery in your town (yay for heavy metals.)

Hey conservatives.  If you do what the liberals are suggesting, and invest in electric transportation, it'll hurt your enemies in the middle east.

The price per barrel of oil just smashed its previous record. Many claim that speculation and profiteering are the cause of this rise in price which in my view is a logical assumption. It seems that the U.S. apparently has enough oil reserves to to last the U.S. for a good 7 months as well. Bush is also asking the Saudis to pump more oil, but many say it isn't the answer. He could easily sign an executive order to initiate drilling within U.S. territory and put a temporary end to the rise oil's cost. What do you think?
Nationalise all oil companies, Hugo Chavez style! Seize all their properties. Fix the oil prices.

The real problem here is that now too many people use oil. Supply is fairly constant and demand is skyrocketing. This is predominantly due to increasing industrialisation of nations like China and India and global increases in car ownership. OPEC does not help matters by acting like greedy cunts. Drilling oil faster is certainly not a solution, since we can't match the increased demand by increasing supply because the rate would not be sustainable and the costs of increasing production at that rate would outweigh the reduction in oil prices, so the price at the pump would continue to rise despite reductions in the price per barrel. The real concern for much of the rest of the world is if/when the dollar recovers fuel prices will jump up enormously.
Solution?

1. Renewables! How better to get out of the pockets of the multinationals than to make your own power?
2. LNG/LPG (depending on where you live I think). Cheaper, less polluting, decent rebates (here at least). Add that to a small car and yeh.
3. General efficiency. Do we really need to leave office lights blazing after everyone's gone home?

I see the problem with petroleum is using it for energy, not making things out of it.

The benefit of electric cars would be mostly a drop in consumption and in pollution.

We'd still need to drill for more oil here and build more refineries.  Also, building more alternative energy power plants would be good.  Wind farms are especially useful in the Midwest.

Agree on all points.  We need to tell the EPA to go sit and spin, drill for our own oil, build more refineries, and invest in alternative energy.  Refusing to utilize the resources we have now is ridiculous.

I think this about sums about our main problem here:

So many things are reliant on petroleum that I don't know how we'll be able to mass produce an alternative energy in time to really make a difference here.

Agreed as well...  But I think the EPA being run practically would be a good thing.  For example, the EPA needs to oversee the drilling that would occur in ANWR, but regulations should be both realistic and effective.  We don't want too much regulation, but we certainly don't want another Valdez incident either.

Electric cars would save only a small amount of total consumption.  We need a clean fuel that works like diesel for shipping and machinery purposes more than for cars.  This is what pisses me off, every environmentalist who blames cars has no clue what they're talking about.

Hydrogen fuel cells are our best bet but the current regimes of oil and petrol cronies will stifle hydrogen deployment for as long as they can.  Corporations don't care about the ecology of the world... that's just not in their manifesto.

However...  electric cars would decrease pollution significantly.  It is true that the biggest offenders of air pollution are power plants, but refineries contribute to a lot of pollution as well.  Cars do a fair share in their own right, and a nationwide switch to electric cars would also entail the benefit of cutting down transport costs.  With gas rising in price, you can imagine how much cheaper driving to work in a car you could just plug up at home would cost.  Now, consider how much cheaper transporting goods would be for small businesses or even companies like UPS.

We're going to need a lot of these cars driving around, and at an affordable price for many people. Hopefully they start implementing this idea to all of their models.

drilling in ANWR is not the solution to the oil crisis. to get the area fully up and running productionwise, as fast as possible (which is as messy as possible), would take about ten years. the amount of oil recoverable from ANWR is NOT more than is present in the middle east, not by a long shot. ANWR is pretty fucking tiny, and can only cause a slight relief from the current oil crisis.

the age of oil is fucking done guys. realize this and adapt or die.

not to mention that hillary is as electable as my left testicle, won't win if she scrapes by on superdelegates (who the fuck wants a candidate who essentially stole the nomination), and doesn't even hold the lead in any delegate group whatsoever?
