So you hate paying taxes but you want the government to exist enough to put banks out of business and take over their job. I'm sure you like having the military around, and your roads paved, and your garbage picked up etc. No? You enjoy all these services and yet you don't want to pay for them. Hell, you probably aren't paying for them anyway. If, like you say you are paying more in interest on your home loan than you are in taxes every year then you undoubtedly fall underneath the tax threshold anyway. FFS guys, he didn't say replace money with sheep, just that where bartering is a viable option, to take that route. Ya know, with craigslist shit like that guy who traded a pen, and eventually worked up to a porsche or whatever. Unfortunately it wouldn't work in most cases, as far as todays society permits. We have a throwaway culture and shit is made cheaply, and made to fail eventually. Nobody wants used junk. But it does work sometimes, like buying refurbished electronics could be viewed as a type of bartering system, at least at the stage where you trade it back for cash or store credit.

Well, it doesn't have to be like that.  They could just remove funding entirely to allow the area to...  adapt...  so to speak.

Certain areas could be deemed as not worth the effort.  The schools would be shut down, and factories could take their place.

Either way, everyone has a use.

I think I'd better read up on what the gold standard means, although I suspect its much too late to go back to that.

I believe they stopped using the gold standard a while ago, there isn't enough gold to back all of our money.

Gold standard is really no different from having a Dollar standard or a cow dung standard or an oil standard or anything else. As long as there is one item all currencies are tied to it makes for ease of transactions. People feel safer with a gold standard because they think they can buy gold as a hedge against collapse. If economies and the world were collapsing you could have Scrooge McDuck's vault and still not be able to buy a pound of flour
