I think that theory has been put forward already...the idea that 'God' is a societal articulation of mankind's innate need to impose some form of moral guidelines on ourselves.

EDIT: I'm more postulating than anything, not necessarily presenting what I believe as reality ... which is purely individual perception anyway.
