The Us could never become a 3rd world country.  First off, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd world thing was used during the cold war, where the 1st World was mainly the Nato, the 2nd were the countries of the Eastern bloc or Warsaw pact, and the 3rd world were the non-aligned countries.  But if 3rd world = undeveloped country, then you can't say the US is a 3rd world country.  The US is a highly developed country with 300M people.  How many people are below the poverty line in a country with 300 million of population?  It's not easy to be a highly developed country having such population.  Of course, there are poor people everywhere, but the US is not close to be undeveloped.
