As you can see, the region the British colonised is in the temperate climate zone.

For temperate climates, changes in these regions between summer and winter are generally subtle, warm or cool, rather than extreme, burning hot or freezing cold.

Conversly, the West Australian Current travels up the West Coast, bringing cold antarctic water. This means less precipretation (resulting in deserts).

As a result of a perfect temperature range and enough rainfall to maintain crops and livestock, Australia "comes out better" than any part of the world you could pick. (That's what you get England, that's what you get )
