Because every form of security is only as strong as it's weakest link - windows PC's are extremely leaky (that is, they reveal information that shouldn't be revealed) - almost to the extent (but not quite) of making any form of encryption virtually pointless.Hakei wrote:

If its a .mov file rename it .doc put it in my documents and no one will be able to open it. rename it English project.doc or something like that.
ok you are just wrong with that statement. first off, truecrypt can use any combination of encryption techniques, not just DES and AES, it can also use more advanced like twofish-serpent and whirlpool, and even better than that, it can COMBINE them to encrypt data mulitple times with different levels of encryption. second of all, "windows PCs are extermely leaky" doesnt make any sense. the encryption standard has nothing to do with the OS, and exactly what information would be revealed that would break encryption? unless you did something really dumb like store the password on the machine, your information is perfectly safe when you encrypt it.Scorpion0x17 wrote:

no one, including the government, could decrypt data that has been encrytped with combinations of the above levels.

Can't recall off top of my head exactly what they're called, but do some research on PC security and look for a phrase something like "side-attacks" - basically in order to view an encrypted document - any encrypted document - on a Windows PC it must be decrypted and held in plain form - and, as I said before - every security system is only as strong as it's weakest link and any system in which the plain text is held as plain text for any length of time is leaky - other OS's have the exact same problem of course.steelie34 wrote:

Don't bother with encryption if there's no one else very "techy" in your house and your just trying to hide the naughties from the family.
Get WinRAR, though you should already have some variant of a zip/rar/X program. Put all the pron in a folder, make it a RAR with the least possible compression. Create said RAR, open it in WinRAR and wherever it is in the menu you can put a password on it.

ah ok, i know what you're talking about. it means in order to view the document, it has to be decrypted and held in the ram, and may be viewable if someone uses a bit dumper on your memory. there actually are ways to mitigate this, with hardware level ram encryption (for the truly paranoid) and making sure your system doesn't have a page file or temp caches. but yes, you're right... once you view a document on a standard PC with windows, there are traces of the decrypted file all over the place. but i still stand my ground and say the encryption hasn't been broken, it's just being compromised by poor handling by the OS.Scorpion0x17 wrote:

Is there a way to password protect a USB flash drive? I don't mind buying one off the shelf with that capability. I am not worried about CIA backdoors or whatever. I am worried about someone breaking in and finding the drive.
right click > turn on bitlocker > encrypt with password
