NEW YORK - Gov. Eliot Spitzer apologized to his family and the public on Monday, but did not not elaborate on a bombshell report that he has been involved in a prostitution ring.

"I have acted in a way that violates my obligations to my family ... my sense of right and wrong," he said at a news conference at his Manhattan office. "I must now dedicate some time to rededicate my trust to my family."

Spitzer's wife stood at his side, her hands behind her back and her eyes cast downward, as he made the statement.

The New York Times reported that a person with knowledge of the governor's role believes the governor is identified as a client in court papers. Four people allegedly connected to a high-end prostitution ring called Emperors Club VIP were arrested last week.

The Web site of the Emperors Club VIP displays photographs of scantily clad women with their faces hidden. It also shows hourly rates depending on whether the prostitutes were rated with one diamond, the lowest ranking, or seven diamonds, the highest. The most highly ranked prostitutes cost $5,500 an hour, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said the defendants arranged connections between wealthy men and more than 50 prostitutes in New York, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Miami, London and Paris.

gg, Eliot. Seriously, pathetic. Can anyone in politics go without corruption anymore? This is pathetic. Puts a bad name on NY. I want Pataki back.

It's now a requirement that you be a corrupt hypocrite, or be corruptible to that point, to be a politician.

That's like 1,000,000,000,000 negative browny points.  Now he will never win another argument with his wife.  That is if she doesn't kill him ...

Corruption is rife everywhere. The Taoiseach over here in Ireland spends more time at a tribunal into his financial affairs than he does running the country...

Just because he used the services of a hooker doesn't necessarily mean he has done something corrupt in terms of his governance. He is a man isn't he? And I guess we all have needs whatever that may be imho.

I agree. I don't necessarily see it as corrupt for him to purchase the services of a prostitute. Not particularly smart if he intends to continue electoral victories, mostly.

However, I do acknowledge what Stingray has said: It was hypocritical to prosecute some and then do what he did.

pretty embarrasing for him, but its a stretch to call soliciting a hooker "government corruption." IDK, maybe the article goes on to say he was using state money? prostitution shouldn't be illegal anyway, its a free choice. criminalization is a pretty useless protection for the women. i mean, its sex, the most natural of human activities. it blows my mind that we think it appropriate for the government to regulate such highly personal affairs.

and all at the same time they have no problem with the porn industry. gee, what a coincidence that they are morally opposed to the act of prostitution on the street level, where independent,  poor families might take an unparalleled profit margin and get out of poverty, but they have no problem whatsoever with the exact same sexual acts and exploitation, PLUS public humiliation as long as its sold in a highly developed industry where the fortune 500s already own the majority of the market.

people really need to start thinking critically before this country is blindly lead to hell.

What I mentioned about corruption - they think he took bribes. Apparentely he had some shady transactions going on, so the [insert name here] decided to wiretap him.

Spitz is a Hillary superdelegate. Think she’ll be getting any awkward questions over this about high-profile politicians who cheat on their wives?

Good point, can anyone explain how an 'actress' in the porn industry is not a prostitute?

Maybe because the guy she's having sex with isn't paying her?

But you could take that logic to the point of calling every married woman who doesn't work outside of the home a prostitute...

In order to ensure I don't get killed in my sleep, I will not comment on that further.

A Democrat gets in trouble for sexual obscenity and the Democrats play it down. A Republican gets in trouble for sexual obscenity and the Republicans play it down.

Aren't people tired of hearing about it already?

Actually if you want to be technical, Spitzer admitted to it and will probably resign.  Unlike the foot tapping guy.

Like it really matters though.

Couple things here that I've noticed:

1) A governor's private life should not effect his job...same with Bill Clinton, JFK, and any other immoral sleeze bags who think manogamy is a wood.  It seriously should not require them to be fired or resign.  People cannot demand they resign and impeachment/recalling, etc should not be an option...unless a crime is committed.

2) However, if a governor/president/senator/congressperson/cabinet, etc, etc commits such acts of immorality in their personal life it does reflect poorly on the offender, shows them to have poor judgement, in some cases (like Spitzer, Vitter, Craig, etc) it is illegal and they should suffer just as the lowly blue collar schmuck on the street suffers for said crimes...maybe even more so for holding such a high office of responsibility and accountability (sadly, it's the opposite in this backwards world).

3) Removal of such a leader should simply be done by not reelecting said scumbag.  Hopefully any illegal acts would have long since yanked said leader from office, but if not, they should be defeated by new candidates in a landslide.

4) On a more commical note, I'd like to add that this is nice, for a change, to not have a holier than thou, wannabe bible thumpin, pretend family values, evil piece of shit replublican doing it.  Finally there's a high profile Dem who's done it Republican style! lol  I was starting to think Dems were pretty righteous for a minute there.
