I've been assigned a group research project on clean energy for an engineering class I'm taking and I got the sub-topic of wind energy. After reading some articles and journals, I've noticed that wind energy is massively popular in Denmark. So I got a little curious...
(These questions aren't part of my research, I'm just wondering )

Do you own a windmill? (Probably not seeing as how you probably don't live in a rural area if you're visiting this web site)
Does your city/town connect to a power grid impacted by wind energy?
How are your power bills? Cheap?

Also, a lot of people are concerned with aesthetics, and some don't like seeing giant wind farms, or even just a couple mills here and there. What are your thoughts? Would you protest further implementation of windmills, even if it meant you'd save money on electricity and also help the environment?

Thanks a bunch
And feel free to include any general thoughts on this. You don't have to answer those specific questions if you don't want to. They're just ones that popped into my mind when writing this.

Unless you own a farm, very few private individuals can afford to own a windturbine. Your electricity company just provides you with power which comes from them. IIRC, in the Netherlands (which has quite a few) you pay ever so slightly more.

Look up Germany, they have a law that states the grow of windmills/year per Provence.
I work for a Firm that does design, inspection and stress analysis on windmills.
A windmill does not come cheap, the current profit operation is a min of 8 year, so you have to run for 8 years before making a profit.. this can vary by turbine tho.
Most turbines are connected to the big network, the European union subsides the energy delivery otherwise it would not be economically viable.

Thanks for the quick replies

What are your thoughts on the people who protest these windmills?

Personally I'm all for building windmills. Sure an empty landscape looks beautiful, but y'know what, I think plains covered in windmills is also beautiful and artistic, not to mention better for the environment and energy production.

Kinda neat link. little scary, considering how big they are.

They seem pretty useful, But I hear that it takes a long time to make up for the energy cost to make them.

Whoa that's awesome! I'm so putting that in my class presentation!

It's pretty freaky, but I am almost thinking that it was a test run to see what happens, because I know people who live near them, and when it gets TOO windy they say that the blades lock down and stop moving.

Just letting you know.

The windmill stalling and speed control device is mounted in the blade supporting hub of a windmill and is operative in response to blade rotation induced by a blade pitch control unit. The device includes a biasing assembly mounted to oppose blade rotation in at least one direction and a stage adjustment unit which operates to aid the biasing unit and increase the opposition to blade rotation when the windmill hub and blades reach and remain within predetermined speed ranges.

It's "Wind Turbine" rather than Windmill" by the way, as a windmill is a mill, (e.g. a machine for grinding, crushing, or pulverising any solid substance,) powered by wind while a Wind Turbine is a turbine, (a rotary engine in which the kinetic energy of a moving fluid is converted into mechanical energy by causing a bladed rotor to rotate,) powered by wind.

Anyway:

mtb0minime you're in luck. My dad is a Senior Manager for Meridian Energy, specificly the Corporate Affairs manager. Meridian Energy is a New Zealand electricity company which specialises in renewable energy and is the first carbon neutral power company. Meridian in the past has mostly worked with hydro but at the moment new Wind Farm proposals are happening all the time and are being built all over the place. New Zealand is largly powered by renewable energy, the exceptions being a few Gas, Thermal and Coal powered plants, and as Hydro scemes are seen as projects which alter the environment too significantly Wind power is really taking hold, (if it weren't for the NIMBYs.)

Anyway if you want I can give you my dad's work E-mail address so you can ask him a few questions - his job is largely public and media relations so he IS the person to ask. University students send him questions all the time, he's usually happy to answer them, (some try to get him to do their whole projects for them, don't try it he's exceptionally good at seeing through this.)

Sweet! I may have to take up that offer. I originally made this thread out of curiosity, but I could definitely get some research out of this
