They'd better make a decent 9800GT card, if that is ever going to come. I am not going to wait for some card that is 100 euro's more expensive and only brings a 5% increase.
9800GT is 8800GT OC with two SLi connectors.
Meh, might aswell get an 8800GT then since they are gonna drop in price anyway!

because G92 GTS ~ 8800GTX it doesn't matter. and it is +$100 more compared to GTS.
A GTX is $300 - £150 now?
GTX is about 300€ now. GT selling at 199€ and GTS at 269€. the new GTX is estimated to be in >350€ price range.
Fuck me I need to start shopping wherever you do. You can pretty much switch the € for a ₤ to get UK prices.

The 9800GX2 is based on the G92 core, so it wouldn't surprise me if the 9800GTX were too. Seems logical that the GT, GTS and GTX are on the same core with just a difference in clock speed & no. of shaders

That's surprisingly bad.
I dunno, they quite clearly stated that the 9 series was going to be an evolution of the 8, rather than a revolution that we saw going from 7>8.  I think a lot of people where setting this thing up as being as big a jump as the 7800GTX>8800GTX that nvidia clearly said wasnt going to happen.

Even with that said though, I was expecting better than this (atleast 10-15%).  Although, not all hope is lost, if it runs significantly cooler, you do have the greater overclocking potential there.

If it's a little cheaper, a little faster and can be overclocked a little more - then it's definitely not an upgrade item for current owners of 8 series cards. For 7 series owners though it offers more upgrade options.

And, this seems, to me, an interesting improvement: ... EDRAM chip for "free FSAAx4."

there is no such EDRAM in it... that was a year old rumor

Too bad it's a rumor. Because they need to address image quality issues cause by (3D GFX cards):
a.) Aliasing (jagged edges).
b.) Shimmering, or jagged-edgeness in general, for alpha blended entities that can't have any FSAA applied.
c.) Mipmaps, distant texture fills.

and add Post Processing...

d.) Progressive depth of filed (Gaussian blur, or circle of confusion based on the z-buffer:depth), film grain, etc.
c.) Shimmering reduction in general (noise reduction based on edge detection algorithms).

A separate chip working on the cued-for-output frame in the buffer would be a nice user option to have.

What's up with all necroposting today?
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

This whole series should be called 8900. Then, the new chip should be put into the 9 series. This would have made things make a whole more of sense.

Isn't the 9800GX2 a G92 card? Because the 8800GTX is a G80 card.

Yep, 9800GX2 is two underclocked 8800GTS in a 'sandwhich' structure.  Although, apparantly, a 9800GX2 can beat two 8800GTS in SLI, but I think that is more down to driver's.

Oh ye people of little faith. Have faith in nVidia. They're not the #1 GPU company in the world for no reason. Just wait until the new drivers come out. There hasn't been a big driver update from Nvidia in a while. Since December, for the 8 series, atleast.

Even WITHOUT the new drivers, the 9800 GX2 is still kicking ass and taking names.

Two beta drivers have come out since then, one as recently as March.

Nvidia hasn't been number one for very long, remember.

Exactly, and besides, I dont think it can be classed as kick ass anyway.  It cant compete on the high res, which is what a high end part should.
