they're undergoing their own dark ages right now. people seem to not realize that.
its only going to get worse before it gets better. each nation must forge their own path, we can't guide them. they have to learn tolerance, it can't be forced down their throats. they must learn to live in peace, it cannot be thrust upon them, and certainly not through the mechanizations of war. they must learn that every person has his own value to the community, be him sunni or shi'ite or catholic or whatever. they must learn to find a system of government that works best for them and their given environmental and economic situation as it currently stands.

most of these countries mentioned have not known anything other than violence so education is another contributing factor

The people of Africa and the Middle East to a certain degree haven't evolved... They are stuck in the past...

I'm not sure how we can help or how they can bring themselves up to the present...

and i think there are a core group of people in Africa and the ME
that are very intent on keeping the people in the past... warlords in Africa and old hard liner Islam types...

The only hope is education and somehow giving these people hope... and not having to wake up everyday wondering if they will get to eat or get killed by some warlordislam asshat...

Africa is three to four times the size of Europe. Depending on where you draw the boundary. Along the coast things are fairly 'developed'. As you get more into the heartland do things start to get strange. Inner Africa is very hand to access. Roads aren't amazing and airports are few and far between. Geographic isolation is one reason Africa is so "fucked up". Whatever that means. I don't know what gauge we are using to measure civilization.

Right after inner China and Istanbul, Inner Africa is some place I would love to spend a few months in. Our perception of the place is painted badly by our media. I want to see how it really is.

I don't mean spending time on a resort like Campoe did. It was really silly that he thought himself well traveled and an expert on foreign places because he spent a week in a tourist trap.

nah, the whole justification and political-moral message behind much of the neo-cons intervention in the ME is essentially a neo-imperialist rehash of old european rhetorical tropes. the whole idea that they are somehow 'backwards' and 'need western liberal democracy'. this implicit assumption that western liberal democracy is the endpoint of all human progress. the idea that if you implant american virtues and values in this atavistic place, that it will suddenly prosper and become a place of near-greek harmony... this is the tacit undertone and message of all 'civilizing' talk. it's not only missionairies - though of course, they are the explicit and overt agents. the whole mission to intervene and reform the middle-east (and africa) is borne out of an inherently paternalistic western-bourgeoisie attitude, that we can somehow install ourselves as benign 'overseers' and make their country better, because we know best. it's bullshit. post-colonial africa and the far-east says so.
