Well, I don't mean booting up exactly. I mean, once I type my password in, I've got to wait about six weeks before Opera/MSN/CoD4 actually starts, as computer is sorting things out and starting other things up.
How can I make this process faster?

Also, I always get "Ituneshelper" or something starting up, which is quite weird as I don't own an Ipod or Itunes. How do I get rid of this?

Tahhhhh

Disable some services, clear out the start up tasks.  Only have what you need start on logon.  Or, get used to getting a drink after you type in your password.

...or just type msconfig in Run.  Then click the Startup tab.

Open the software, click Trace>Next boot+Driver delays.
You PC will now restart. When its restarted, click Trace>Optimize system. PC will now restart again.

Right go to.......

Start Menu/Run(type in) Msconfig......go to startup on the end tab. Click the things you dont really need on startup. Ie printers, scanners, and software also like msn messenger. This will disable them from the next startup. make sure you disable the things you do not need on startup only though.  Hope this helps.

Or as Funky says above.

Hey Finny, will a faster startup time help fix that relationship you screwed up?

Walk to the kitchen, find the cupboard full of glasses. Pick up a glass. Take it to a tap, activate the tap and put the glass under it. When the glass is full remove it. You now have a drink.

I had the same problem with Ipod stuff loading up.

I fixed by :
going to control panel -> Administrative tools -> Component Services
then select "Services (local)" from the console root tree (on the left of the window)
This lists out the programs that could be running in the background (I believe) on the right side of the window.

Find iPod Services and right click
select properties
On the "General Tab" of the properties window select the "Start-up Type" pulldown and pick "Disable"

I am not a tech support person, I just kind of found this after getting ticked off at the Ipod stuff always
starting up.

I have been leary about turning other some of the other stuff due to their cryptic names.

Hope this helps though

If you have vista, use this part from an awsm vista setup tutorial:

http://www.tweakhound.com/vista/tweakguide/page_8.htm How to disable services, and which to disable.

You might want to look at the other pages too

This. Every "slow computer" I fix for family and community is because they have every program on their computer set to auto startup. Disabling all the things you don't use at startup (read: everything) can be disabled. In the msconfig startup tab, there are also a lot of drivers and arguably necessary software like anti virus software. There are plenty of websites that can help figure out what's needed and what isn't, just put the name of the entry in to google and you'll get tons of results right off the bat.

Oh, and a huge disclaimer: don't use limewire, and don't download porn. That will always manage to fuck up your computer. But then, I'm guessing you already knew that.

And especially don't download porn off limewire. It's like having a huge red balloon with "I like CP" written on it floating over your house
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.
