I don't know anymore than from just watching the movie (like that kid) but Spoiler (highlight to read):
I'd suspect that the satellite falling from the sky wasn't what woke it or discovered it, but the mission to retrieve it after it fell did, I can't see how the small satellite would've reached the bottom at a decent speed, let alone wake something buried deep down.
