Well, I recently got 8 trojans, without having a firewall, anti virus or anything like that, so I decided it might be time to upgrade my defences, so to speak.

I have no idea what I need, but it needs to be easy to use, and can't hog too much CPU/RAM etc.

Free is good, but I can *aquire* those that cost money.

aaaaand go.

Since not all AV/Firewall programs run on Vista: Do you have Vista or XP?

AVG is a very good free anti-virus program.

You might want go get some anti-spyware stuff too, Spybot and Ad-Aware do the trick.

bitdefender is the best. It doesnt take up much cpu usuage. Also it has a mode called "gamer mode" meaning it will use even less of the cpu and other applications while you play and it will still defend.

I tried AVG, and hated it.

It was impossible to find out how to disable the firewall, or edit the permissions.

Avast for Virus Scanner (It works on Vista but I have not used it on anything but XP) - Free but good
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

firewalls for Vista no idea - at least have the Windows one on to start with!

If your concerned over resources being hogged don't use McCrappy or Norton, IMHO, but Trojans and viruses etc will use more resources and fook up your PC performance more than any half decent protection

Nod32 is the best, low resource usage and good defence against all sorts of bad internet stuff.

I used to be a Anti-virus enthusiest, i used to run the tightest AV/FW.
But... It gets annoying, and im experienced enough on the internet now to avoid viruses in the first place. I have my safe places for porn and anything i need.

Also, i run firefox. Thats why im not infected. Once i went to check out my myspace to see how the code looked in IE, I got a virus and i was only on IE for about 5 minutes.

I was so pissed.

So i reformatted.

I still haven't run IE yet on this installation. I don't intend to.

and believe me im anal about viruses. If im infected with even the tiniest bit of spyware/malware shit, i reformat. I don't trust AV to remove it when its just as easy to start fresh again. I like to keep my system in a way where i can reformat if i need to with minimal backing up needed.

run Spybot as a task nightly, turn tea timer on.
If you have a router ... that most of the battle there.

I use Avast.. It's really good, doesn't annoy you and protects when it needs to. Just get a subscription by entering your email adress and confirming it then youre good to go. Also about 'acquireing' the programs that cost money, first off don't download paid antivirus software, that's bound to have problems, usually doesnt work and you might aswell get a virus from it itself. Secondly those that cost money are just good enough if not worse than the good free ones out there, Avast for example.

I use Norton 360 on Vista 64 Ultimate and it works very well for me.  It has a small foot-print, and optimizes your P.C. while it's idle.  I also use AVG to catch anything Norton may have missed and that too is a very good program.

NOD32 or Avast Pro with Spybot S&D or Spy Sweeper.

AVAST! > AVG
(test fact)

I am using avast on my school laptop now, doesnt slow the PC down at all...
It came with CA Thrust Antivirus, which froze the PC at 10 each day when it started updating I changed the time to update, but it still froze at 10... I am thinking incompetent admins at my school but I just changed to avast ;b

Spybot S&D + Ad-aware 2007 + Empty Temp Folders = a must..

+ No-script addon if you have firefox
Your thoughts, insights, and musings on this matter intrigue me

I installed avast, and it's currently killing trojans....

I like it a lot, much better than AVG, kapersky and Norton
