You can do it with just two people for maps other then Mashtuur where you can't get a full load. Pilot as Engy, and gunner as medic. Pilot swaps out to repair when taking too much damage, leaving the bhawk pilotless - this makes it so nobody can get missle lock on you and you can only take MG fire damage. The gunner swaps into pilot seat to straighten for shots when needed if the Engy is still repairing.
You need two strong players for this, but it makes the Bhawk a veritable fortress even with enemy jets in the air and jeeps on the ground, but you only need 2 people. SirNick and I do this on USMC on Wake island all the time, and it is rare to loose a round!
A quick sample Nick took just from a round today where we were having fun,

In the videos, especially the #2 you can see how we do it with nick swapping in to pilot when I repair, he only pilots for a few seconds to steady the course so he can keep gunning and I can keep repairing until I'm ready to take over again. Also note that I'm squad leader and the rest of our squad is using us as a mobile spawn point the entire round. This is really handy when you want to capture the airfield - Nick and I kill anything that moves while the rest of the squad takes the flag. Then I pick up anyone left alive and continue to another flag. It's quite the gun ship!
A note to anyone who flies the bhawk, FFS, let people get back in when a flag is captured, dont throttle up and fly off it's so aggrovating!
Thanks to SirNick. for taking those quick videos while we were blasting them away! I wish I had thought to fraps more myself today!
