You could get a much cheaper laptop that does everything you want it to, if you really needed a portable computing machine.....thing.

seems pretty expensive for something that doesn't even have a dvd drive, one USB and no network

Especially that it doesn't have a network port sucks. For example: my place isn't big, but the house is old and the walls are huge. Right now there is no way I can get a wireless signal in my bedroom. I want to be able to surf in the evenings

Yup, I just walked out of there with my boss and he is going to buy three for our office. We will use them when we travel on business because it is becoming increasingly hard to lug a laptop through airport security. With the amount of crap I carry on a trip not having 15lbs worth of laptop, mouse, psu, portable hd, cds, etc would so nice.

"I could easily see the MacbBook Air being a nightmare for technical support. What happens if you have to reinstall Mac OS or run some kind of system diagnostic? I imagine most people wont buy an external optical drive for this thing. And if your MacBook Air wont boot, the remote optical drive feature wont do you much good."

You can install from a external hd vi usb. I have a old iPod I use to install Leopard on all my machines.
