If you put your mind to it and don't give up and be prepared to be playing rubbish stuff for a while... then yes. You will be able to play.

Does it need to be easy? I mean, I've been playing the guitar some time now, it's not always easy, but I still like it.

Do it.

Not easy, but worthwile.

I'm a private bass teacher, would like to add a couple of comments.

#1 - Get lessons, don't try to teach yourself.  Good technique is vital, don't just try to bash out notes, especially at speed. You won't develop good coordination and posture wihout the advice of a good tutor. It's very easy to take shortcuts when teaching yourself which will inhibit your playing and lead to nasties such as RSI and carpal tunnel.

#2 - Listen hard. Remember it's about the sound, not playing fast or looking cool.

#3 - Don't rush. Practise material slowly and progressively (little at a time), before rushing in and compounding potential mistakes.

#4 - Tab is a scourge. Playing by ear = an essential skill. Reading by notation = a massively helpful tool. Tab = dumbing down, playing by numbers. If you just want to play songs, fine, you can manage without reading music. If you want to be a musician, learning to read is a big help.

Remember, tab gives no indication of rhythm, and also gives you someone else's way of playing. Not to mention most tabs found online are highly innacurate.
Reading music allows you to make your own choices about left hand positions, and gives you a massive choice of repertoire to play. Not trying to force you into it, just offering a counter argument to all the tab-junkies.

im self taught and still dont know how to read music etc. i started coz a couple of mates wer in a band and i used to go to their practises to watch and became interested. i couldnt play for shit at the start but i picked songs i liked that sounded easy and looked at the tabs and played along to them, litening to the song over and over and just kept coming back to it etc. i ended up joining the band as a bass player like 2 years ago over which time i learnt guitar too.

I don't think it's easy to learn any instrument, but if you have experience in drumming or a band it may be just that little bit easier. I always plan on learning the guitar or harmonica later in life, but not right now, i'm too lazy, play WAY too many computer games, and have too much to do in my younger years. When I need a hobby at 35-40, I may pick it up.

Good luck with learning.
I Started off learning the guitar (Still am, really) a few months ago and also started to learn the harmonica at Christmas. It's really easy to pick up the basics, I only practice about half an hour a day and can play a few little songs

And as for Ryan (who by the way, sucks at Halo 3 ), I would start it up I'm glad I did, and even thoug I've been playing a few months now and I'm not too great, I can still play some parts to songs I like and it just feels cool being able to do that. I'm still learning though, and I feel like I'm getting better every day I play It's quite rewarding, and I can't wait until I can finally play it to a pretty good standard.

Also, for those who are saying Guitar Hero does absolutely nothing for guitar skill, I disagree in a way. I started learning guitar before I played the game, but I got it and I'd say it's helped me a bit. Even though it hasn't taught me any ways to play songs, it has helped with my finger dexterity and helping to build rhythm if you have none.

Fairly easy to get the basics down. Some people are naturals though, and progress incredibly faster, some people are mostly talentless (like me), and may need lessons, and a lot of time to be good.

Oh, and it's always easier to learn on a accoustic.

And with all things, it takes time and dedication.

Did you just say that Guitar Hero is a good start for real guitar?
It's not even close, but it's better than play guitar hero imitations on your computer keyboard.

If you've ever learned how to play an instrument before, then it's not that hard.

Also, gotta love the irony
