The fact that Diablo II LOD & FF XI are still in the gamefaqs top 10 PC games says that games just can't hold their popularity anywhere near as long as some of the older games. Admittedly, LOD is probably the best game in its category and FF XI is probably filled with fanboys but still. And Brood War was in that list for the large majority of the time the game has been in existance.
I will say that all FPS need to be a lot longer then they are. COD4, Crysis... are all way to short. When you consider how long some of the older FPS were it's quite discouraging. They should concentrate less on flashy graphics and more on innovation and longer game play. Unless the game is purely online (ie BF2) then you can't claim that the multiplayer is extending the gameplay. Or at least not in the same way as a good/long/decent storyline brings.
Personally i'm not a fan of the COD4 multiplayer and much prefer that of BF2. Nothing is more fun then paddling/knifing one of the many people mentioned above that are supposedly ruining the game. TF2 was fun to start off with but got mediocre quickly (Except for the spy class). I haven't heard anything good about the Crysis multiplayer. And i've always hated the CS/CSS games because they seem to have a personal vendetta against me for some reason.
Well all you can really do is hope that the next big thing will live up to its hype. Although the better a game is the more hype it receives and the more it is criticised for being over-hyped.

FFXI.
What a game. Played it for about a month, as MMORPG's bore me afte about that long, but wow.
That game has the
nicest people you will ever meet in a game.
Damn good fun playing it, too.
