Okay, first of all, I know it's a boring topic, read no further if you aren't interested in helping me choose an upgrade.

I'm interested in upgrading my 'gaming computer,' particularly to smooth out my CoD4 performance. It runs above 30 fps with all the settings on low,  but I get little hiccups during some of the action and would like to see the game run with BF2's continuous high frame rate.

My computer:

7900 GT
AMD X2 3800+ 2.0ghz 939 socket
2 gb RAM

My options:

1. More ram -  will this help CoD4? ~$100-200
2. New processor - with 939 socket, something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6819103002 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6819103582 (both pretty overclockable) would be my only choices ~$100-200
3. New gpu - 8800GT or GTS ~$200-300 (would my system be horribly "bottlenecked?")
4. New MB, RAM, and processor-C2D ~$500 (Would I get good performance in CoD4 with a C2D, 2g RAM, but still running the 7900GT?)

You don't need more RAM.

I'm running on 3.0 GHz, 1GB RAM, and a 8600 GT. Game looks fantastic, and runs perfectly.

Weird. I run everything on medium, 2x AA with Athlon 64 2.2Ghz, 1GB ram, and a 7600GS.  And I get 40fps, no hiccups.

Check your processes running in the background.  COD4 runs great on really low system specs, you should be getting much better performance for what u got.

As noted, cod is actually pretty light game and you don't have a horrible system. If you're dead set on spending the cash, I'd put it in a graphics card where you're at right now.

Actually, I'm not sure if I get 30 fps, it might be a lot higher than that, but it feels more sluggish than BF2. For example, when I turn sharply it seems choppy rather than precise. I found this to be especially true when I was playing with all GFX on low, but my res up at 1280x1024.

The temporary fix I've settled on is played at, don't laugh... 640x480. At this resolution its almost precise, and its not so difficult to spot far away character models. Its still kind of pathetic though.

I don't think I am running anything in the background that would make a difference and this is a pretty new installation of xp.

What an honor! Yeah, a video card was my first thought, does 'bottlenecking' not apply to a system like mine? I'd really rather not spend any money, but I also don't want to settle for 640x480.

Cool, thanks. Its says my computer passes the minimum requirements and fails the recommended requirements. The 7900GT meets the recommended requirements, but my CPU, the 2.0 ghz AMD X2 3800 fails the recommended requirements for a 2.4 ghz processor. Should I look into overclocking my AMD to 2.4 ghz? I could get a 2.8 ghz AMD opteron, would this be as fast as a 2.0 ghz C2D? I just really want to run the game at a high resolution with fps always over 100 but I'm not sure if its going to be possible without spending money or overclocking.

Well if you don't plan on getting any graphic heavy games in the near future, I guess I'd go with upgrading your CPU.

My average FPS on my system is around 80-90, if I recall correctly.

my machine runs cod4 all on high no hiccups nothing not sure what fps though
but it seems nice and smooth

2gb ocz ram
amd 4000+ 939 socket
similar system surley yours should run better

yeah this is weird, because i just installed xp with all up to date drivers like 3 weeks ago. it works okay in 640x480, but still not nearly as smoothly as BF2. Its particularly noticable when making a quick 180 degree turn etc, like i might only see a couple frames in the turn.

You need more processing power, I have 2.4Ghz, 2GB and a 7600GT and I get about 70-90 FPS on low, and I think I could crank it up a bit, but I like smooth gameplay, and it looks fantastic anyway. Your processor is severely bottlenecking your system.

EDIT: Ohh, I thought you had only 2Ghz, not a dual core. No fucking idea why your computer is running slow if I can run it at what I am with what I've got.

if your motherboard will let you i would recommend trying to OC your current chip.  You should be able to run pretty high settings @ 1280x1024 with a little more CPU power. I don't remember the exact setting I use but i use 2x AA and mostly high settings and get 55 or so avg FPS with an X1800XT (pretty much the same perf as your 7900GT) 2 gig of DDR 500 and an Opteron 170 @ 2.6 ghz, so the only thing i really have up on you is the processor.

That computer will be fine for CoD4, you don't need to upgrade.

2 gb ram (bought for BF2 actually), 3 gig P4 I've had for years and a 6800 GT. CoD runs more then functionally though it lacks some of the bells and whistles. Not most, just some.

You definitely don't need to upgrade just to play CoD4.
