Bhutto killed in suicide attack

Benazir Bhutto, the former Pakistani prime minister, has been killed in a gun and suicide bomb attack at an election rally in the city of Rawalpindi.

At least 16 others were also killed in the attack with another report saying at least 20 bodies were seen at the rally site after the explosion.

"At 6:16 p.m. she expired," said Wasif Ali Khan, a member of Bhutto's party, present at Rawalpindi General Hospital.

Police said a suicide bomber fired at Bhutto as she was leaving the rally venue in a park before blowing himself up.

"The man first fired at Bhutto's vehicle. She ducked and then he blew himself up," said Mohammad Shahid a police officer.

Al Jazeera's Sohail Rahman reporting from Islamabad said several hundred people had attended the rally.

Hospital Anguish

Her supporters at the hospital began chanting "Dog, Musharraf, dog," referring to Pakistan's president, Pervez Musharraf.

Some of them smashed the glass door at the main entrance of the emergency unit, others burst into tears.

Bhutto had served twice as Pakistani prime minister between 1988 and 1996.

She had returned to Pakistan from an eight-year exile on October 18.

Her homecoming parade in Karachi was also targeted by a suicide attacker, killing more than 140 people.

On that occasion she narrowly escaped injury.
Earlier on Thursday, four people were shot dead and three wounded at an election rally of Nawaz Sharif, another former prime minister.

Sharif blamed supporters of the party that backs Musharraf.

The attacks are the worst directly related to the January 8 polls since campaigning intensified in mid-December.
A sad passing of one of Pakistan's greatest Prime Ministers.

Did Musharraf have a part to play in this tragic event? Was it merely one of his supporters? What will be the effect on the upcoming Pakistan elections?

I'm sure usmarine, Serg, Gunslinger and CamPoe will all have a say in this.

After the first attack on her convoy you could tell that the next would be fatal.

I doubt that Musharraf had any hand in this.

A spokesperson for the al-Qaeda terrorist network has claimed responsibility for the death on Thursday of former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

“We terminated the most precious American asset which vowed to defeat [the] mujahadeen,” Al-Qaeda’s commander and main spokesperson Mustafa Abu Al-Yazid told Adnkronos International (AKI) in a phone call from an unknown location, speaking in faltering English. Al-Yazid is the main al-Qaeda commander in Afghanistan…

Death squads were allegedly constituted for the mission and ultimately one cell comprising a defunct Lashkar-i-Jhangvi’s Punjabi volunteer succeeded in killing Bhutto.

I don't get it, I thought she was somewhat with the extremists. Then again, just about everyone is trying to kill everyone else over there.

Is it really worth putting money in to the country and trying to save it? They don't seems to care so why not pull out all aid from the country and tell the terrorist we will not give any aid untill you all give up. See how long they can last without it.

I'm fairly sure that Musharraf was involved in her death, but I doubt he was really that upset by it.

Methinks the reason Al-Qaeda assassinated her was because she was the ideal candidate to replace Musharraf, whose idiocy allows the terrorists to flourish in the area.

My condolences to the democratic Pakistanis, and the world.

I'm sure that Musharraf is either involved or just very happy to hear about it. Or both.

Some sad stuff.  I jsut text messaged my two pakistani friends with the news.  We had hoped she'd win..even though she wouldn't live out her first term.  And yes, after the bombing in karachi that killed 145 trying to get to her, it was obvious she was marked to die.  Some sad stuff..especially if it was Musharaf's doing.  She's much more popular than Musharaf among ordinary Pakistani's which really suggests it was Musharaf...now he only needs to kill the other contender and he's set to win.
