I currently have everything set on the lowest settings, except Geometry and Draw distance.
Even when playing on servers close to me (20-30 ping), I still get frame rate drops.

CoD4 runs perfectly on medium settings, so I don't think it's my computer.

Am I missing something?

My specs:
Pentium D 3 GHz
1 GB Ram
GeForce 8600 GT (256 MB)
Running on XP.

Those are your problems. You need at least a P4, but really, you should go for a new dual core processor. Also get another gig of RAM.

Are you joking me? I run everything high BUT Geometry. You only need that at like Medium MAX. That laggs you down a lot.

Pentium D is higher than P4.  I have a PD 3.2GHz Dual Core.  It was actually an massive upgrade from the P4 before it.

The processor is not your problem.

Edit: Your running close to the same system I am.  I don't think there is anything wrong with your system.  Probably some underlying software problem.

Turn View Distance to 100% but keep Geometry at Med. and see how it is. I can see plenty far with those settings.

Well I usually have 25 processes running when playing BF2, so I don't think it's anything related to that.
There might be something hidden though.

I'll try your suggestion out Panther.

A year ago I ran BF2 on all high settings with gig of RAM and an x850xt.  It's not a hardware problem.

omfg.. you guys cant be serious... talk about always wanting to burn another guys computer... all of you should grow up.. an 8600 isnt that bad ffs.. his processor is fine.. sure 1 gig of ram aint grand but itll do.. bf2 tends to do this, running crap... and its normally due to something being tweaked with the video card when installing new programs... its very rare but it happens.. your best bet would be to reinstall the graphics driver.  If that doesnt work.. clear your cache.  If all that fails.. reinstall bf2.. on your system.. that should take what.. 15 mins?

Geometry does help with view distance, you may be able to "see plenty far" but I can guarantee that people with geometry and view distance maxed will have an advantage on you.

I don't care if they can see another 50-100 yrds. But I have that 50-100 yrds less to render. The more you have to render at once the more junk you have to use.

EDIT: That extra view doesn't mean shit unless you like sniping to your computer's max capability.

You might want to try a higher resolution and see if that help, I have no idea if it would help but i remember when my friend got a new computer

he tried Oblivion on it at 1024x768 and it ran ok but not great then i told him to turn it way up just to see the detail and at 1600x1200 it actualy ran a

hell of alot better. It's worth a shot anyway...

Yes I am. Anything you use doesn't exceed the max range of your view. Any TV guided missiles, A-A missiles, etc. can be EASILY used without having to view 500 yrds past the point where they actually work.

Well I tried both increasing the res and lowering Geometry, but I still get the occasional frame rate drop.

Also: After changing those settings, all the ground had disappeared. I could still see the carrier, trees, grass, buildings, vehicles, etc. but not the ground itself. I didn't have a problem since I was flying anyways, but I was wondering...would that increase FPS because there is less to render?

aaand one more question: By increasing the resolution, everything in the game menus looks really sharp and crisp, but in-game text looks really blurred. Any idea why?

Do you have a virus scan program running when playing BF2? That could cause stuttering. Also, does the stuttering stay with you after say, 5-10 minutes of play?
