When running crossfire gpus, does it have to be from the same brand card?
No, Crossfire is more lenient than SLI even. I believe you can run 2 different cores, because you can change the way the two cards render the gaming screen.
You cannot run a 2900XT and a 3870 in Crossfire since they don't have the same chip, your motoherboard would simply not recognize them as 1.
Example:
2 3850 Crossfire, different brandname - yes
4 3850 CrossfireX, different brand names (Sapphire MSI ASUS) - yes
A 2900XT + a 3870 same brandnames - no!

wow, four gpu's.... My last rig was Sli, personally after going back to single gpu it feels more stable..
How does crossfire compare to Sli, been thinkin about a second gaming pc, want to build an AMD ATi box....

ITs possible to run 4 ATi cards but the BETA drivers for them are shitty and would crash when opening Paint. I would get 2 3850's in Crossfire and when the improved drivers come out, buy 2 more, thats rougly 550$ for 4 new cards.
Damn thats cheap. I havent followed ATi since the Radeon 9xxx series...
Nvidia wins it pure looked at performance but Nvidia cannot beat ATI in price/performance.
Okay, thanks guys. Now i know i can buy a Saphire card and then later i can go buy an ASUS card or a Visiontek card.
Yeah you can. I'm running 3870 with 2900XT right now._NL_Lt.EngineerFox wrote:

Alpha as fuck.
Are they actually running with crossfire enabled?Nyte wrote:

And is it software or hardware crossfire?
This implies that you can only pair-up certain combinations, but then, this could well be those combinations that are officially supported, rather than those that are possible.
I'll try HD2900 + HD3870 crossfire later today if the HD3870 arrives...
It works now but will probably be disabled with new drivers... I mean with intel chipset motherboard. With 790FX you can pair them up as you want...

That's what I thought, then I googled cos I realised Nyte won't be coming back for another month or seven._NL_Lt.EngineerFox wrote:

Alpha as fuck.
You need beta drivers, I can't guarantee if it'll work on the Catalyst ones you find on AMD's website.GC_PaNzerFIN wrote:

Got a download link for Vista drivers? I'll try couple official cats and see if it works...Nyte wrote:

grrr. mixed crossfire doesn't work anymore with Intel motherboards... Both cards are detected just fine by both drivers and windows BUT the drivers notice that "HAHAAAA. NO AMD MOTHERBOARD!" and disable crossfire....
