My wife and I both have our carry permits. Right now I don't carry a pistol unless I go on a long trip out of town. She carries a taser and a can of mace. She teaches fifth grade in a rough part of Nashville, and recently there have been a rash of car jackings, rapes, etc.. I guess my question would be does anyone carry, and if so what kind? Right now I have a glock, but I would probably get something smaller for her. She can handle a weapon. She shoots on the weekends with us at the gun club, and will pheasant hunt and so forth. Any tips will be rewarded with a stinky Cincinnati bow tie.

Our liberal WI governor in all his wisdom has vetoed concealed carry for our state so I don't have first hand experience carrying.  I'd only do so when traveling or when going to certain areas of Milwaukee.  Friends in MI and IN carry a Glock and a Springfield XD respectively.  When the law is finally passed here I plan to get a Springfield XD for myself.  Only one of their wives carries and she has a S&W revolver, not sure what caliber.

springfield 1911 .45 that will stop them in there tracks!
i have one for deer hunting and its an animal! not too great for the ladys thoug too much recoil. if ya want some power though go with the s&w .500. youll need a pack mule to haul it around but if ya gotta kill a rhino it can do the job!! lol

One of my friends carries a Springfield XD as well.  He thinks very highly of it.  The Glock sub-compacts are pretty popular.  I have also heard good reviews of the Walther PPK/S, if you are comfortable with .380ACP (I know a lot of people consider 9x19 to be the smallest SD caliber they are comfortable with).

Any preferences?  Revolver vs. magazine loaded?  Single action, DAO, or DA/SA?  Caliber?

In England its a minimum five-year sentence for carrying a gun if caught, on those grounds i would not like to say where i keep my AK........

I'm not worried about the polymer frames.  HK uses polymer frames on their pistols and Spec Ops uses HK SOCOMs, so I'd say they're fine.  The Glock feel and sights are what I hate, so I picked up a HK USP a couple years ago.  Loved that, but needed money and had to sel it.  Springfield XD is a Glock-like design and fits my hand like a glove and I can get the sights on target more comfortably.  That will likely be my next purchase when I get the money saved.  Only thing that I'd have to get used to is the trigger safety.

This is what I am thinking about for my wife - http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/ … y_rn=15712

Yea I have looked at the s&w .500 for boar hunting in the spring. I would probably think of getting it if I knew I was going to get to go more than once.

I carry a glock model 23. (40 S&W).  It fits my hand really well, is easy to strip and clean, and is almost dummy proof when it comes to operation.  The only drawbacks are the loooooooong first trigger pull (for those who don't know it has  a trigger safety) and I'm not in love with the magazine release, and I'm sure your wife would have a hard time with it's location as well.  My next gun purchase will either be a 96fs (I've shot the 92fs and loved it I just want the 40) or the Taurus 24/7 OSS ds40N.  If I was going to buy my wife a carry gun, I'd get her a Ruger New Vaquero in .357 with the 4 5/8 inch barrel.  I'm sure your wife is capable of handling a semi-auto, but in a panic situation you can't beat a revolver. No jams, stovepipes or double feeds just nasty, nasty holes.  Just my .02.

.500 is all the rage right now, but the .460 casull is a better round.  If you plan on getting a larger caliber like that you may as well buy a reloading press, dies, brass tumbler and all the goodies unless you are rich those suckers are expensive.

You might want to check out the S&W M&P series as well.  (I've heard some positive rumors about those.)
