I'm making an AK5 as my first project on 3DS Max. I forgot to hollow out the inside of the barrel. I made another cylinder and put it inside the barrel, then when to pro boolean to carve out the inside of the barrel. I can't seem to get it working, and now it has converted the barrel to a pro boolean.

Anytime I try and change the barrel back to an editable poly, the entire thing just dissapears.

Any ideas how to make the barrel into an editable poly again without making it dissapear?
Thanks.

its possible that it has been set to hide when it turns back to an editable poly. hit ctrl+a and see if it gets selected, or hit up your hidden objects list. right click > something or other.

i don't know very much about 3ds so if its something bigger than that i can't help you. sorry.

Thanks, I might try that later on. I ended up just making a new barrel anyways, but if it happens again, I'll try what you said.

no problem. i had something similar once, and thats what was suggested to me, so i thought i'd pass it on. catbox is the one to really ask around here though.

Impressed highly you have the program.
Good luck in your further education in animation.

Guh more troubles. I hate booleans.
https://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b386/derish14/ak5.jpg

I cut out those 4 circles in the hand guard, they go all the way through. But now there are these edges there that I can't get rid of. It totally deformed the gun now. How can I fix it?

edit: Nevermind, fixed it. lol

dont hate them. let them be your friends. select all polygons in the object, go to edit geometry and remove any smoothgrouping.

I don't recommend using booleans.

They can fuck your model up.

To make a hollow barrel, select the faces at the tip, the extrude it inwards to define the thickness, than extrude it backwards as far as need.

..I'm not too sure what the terminology is in Max. I use Maya.

or just make controlled booleans.

Yes, they leave excess vertecies, just remove them. Booleans can be used for so many other useful things than just cutting out.

Is this program pretty easy to use? I was thinking about getting it but it's 4GB and I'm running out of space on my 40GB HD

By the way...that looks like a Galil or something, not an AK.

Spider: 3d programs look hard at first. You just have to spend some time with them. Find tutorials and the like.

Meh.

I only use them if there is absolutely no way I can extrude what I need.

lol. AK stands for "Automatic Karbine" - swedish army rifle. He is doing my video tutorial. Somone at the PR forum requested that weapon, and it was easy to make, and I was wanting to show some faster techniques than plane modeling like the glock and beretta tutorial uses.

Spider; 4gb? mine is like 700 mb or something.

Ohhh.

I have never found a gun tutorial for Maya.
Well...one...but the outcome was way too amateur looking.

Buuut: I hope you didn't tell him to use booleans to make those 4 holes (well..8 probably). There's a cleaner way.

hehe, you seem like you have quite some experince Its apparent in the quality of work you have shown off. My work is mostly inteded for video games, which will limit the detail and accuracy of the model a lot. But I am working on a few detailed models, but as you know it takes time to do

Thank you.

Well if you're trying to keep it low-poly, I guess it is better to use booleans.

I can't make low-poly models to save my life. I have hard time leaving details out.

Normal mapping helps too.

That's just cause you aren't used to it. I learned how to do a complete character under 500 triangles right away, so it's pretty easy for me (even if they like like complete shit ).

Just download the trial version and a keygen, that`s what I did. The trial is only 500MB

Maybe the one I was looking at is the Deluxe version or something? I think it's the one with a $3.500 price tag

Just google 3D Studio Max 2008, download the trial, then go and find a nice working keygen. I won't go into details (I'll get banned), but it's the easy way.
