So I'm getting a laptop soon, and have desided that I want to backup all the files I have (around 500 gb)

After discussing with people on IRC, I have come up with a few options.

#1 - Get an external harddrive

Once I run out of space, I could daisy chain another one onto it, using Firewire.
This HD also let's me back up the files to a web-server.

#2 - buy a small local server

This would let me backup ALL the PCs in the house (My 2, my brothers', mom's, dad's, etc), and let me retrieve the files over the internet. Sounds like a good idea imo, but I have no idea how much it would hurt my connection, when I am uploading files to it. (my bothers won't like it if I lag up their game because of me uploading files to the server.)

#3 - build a cheep server

for about 500-700 bucks. Same as above really.

#3 sounds like the best option, but I have no idea how I would do it. I have only built 1 PC before, but I'm guessing building a small server like this is about the same thing?

1) Which option is best?
2) How much will a server like this effect my internet connection? (I would have around 1TB of storage there.)
3) If option 2 or 3 is best, please give me tips on the best choice of servers.
4) Can I connect the external HD to 2 PC's at the same time?

Yep, good choice! An external hard drive will give you a lot of space to backup your data.

This is also a good option to allow you to backup more data. Just make sure you get good components!

DELL servers are fantastic. You won't be upgrading them except for hard drive space, and they are ridiculously cheap and are also very reliable. I would definetely recommend this.

1. Option #2, DELL;
2. Unless you are file-transferring, your network connection won't lose any speed until you do;
3. DELL;
4. On some, I think it is supported - yes!

i diss DELL a lot, but their servers are actually very good and very cheap. as coldfussion said, raid10 would be your best choice

Best option IMO:

#1 - Because it won't take so much time and it's the most simple and easy way. And it's the cheapest of all 3.

But always go with Dell servers. Getting one delivered tomorrow from them, and saved about £300
