I just picked up this nice ka-bar impact knife.

I thoroughly read through my states laws and I think that carrying that is aloud.

I also read and fully understand when a weapon should be used: If I'm in immediate danger of being killed. Its all about surviving.

Now comes the question, Do you think its safe, and legal (again, I did my research, I think it is, but I could be wrong) for me to carry a knife?
I thinks it´s fucking mental that you´re allowed to carry a knife in public.
You would never be allowed to do that in sweden, unless you needed a knife in your daily work, such as a carpet knife or something.

So you are allowed to carry a knife, designed for killing, 5 years before you are allowed to consume alchohol?!??

In my opinion, no 'civillain' should be allowed to carry around a weapon. Especially knives.
The KA-BAR is a 12-inch fighting and utility knife (7 inches making up the blade) first used by the US Marines in World War II, and carried into battle by generations of Marines since that conflict.
Jesus christ. Your knife is based off a combat knife. A COMBAT KNIFE!

I don't get your country...
An aussie who doesn't understand why we carry knives!!!! ahahahahahahahahahahahahah.

It's a useful tool, no matter what your trade. While I would disagree with his particular choice of knife, I use mine everyday. Hell, that's why I have so many. Different tools for different situations.

Of course, when you pull out a knife, you'd better hope to God that you don't get disarmed by someone better with one than you. Anyone carrying a blade for self-defense should take lessons.

everyone seems to think of knives as a weapon, but to me it will always be a tool.

Guns don't necessarily equal less safety, and honestly, why would you find yourself in many fights anyway?  You don't seem like the aggressive type.
Turquoise,  I think the handgun death rate in Baltimore and D.C. has more to do w/those places being f- ghettos & having a high concentration of poor people living in an area w/no industry other than the drug trade.  Have you been to SE D.C. or Baltimore? (The house flipping, urban renewal trend didn't stop at the stop light in front of the row houses there for safety reasons).  The poverty & the drug trade creates the violence in those places, not the lack of licensed guns.  Texas is far less urban & a far larger place by comparison.  In the two largest urban areas, Dallas (where I live now) & Houston, there is quite a bit of crime.  Both cities rank in the top 20 in the 2005 national crime rate statistics.  They haven't outlawed guns in Detroit & St. Louis, but those cities aren't any safer either as they ranked 2 & 3 in crime.  For the Northern cities it's a consequence of industry & economic prosperity moving from North to South.  People left in those areas gotta eat & they wanna live the good life too & they'll use a gun if it's available.

In some situations the innocent person walks away & sometimes the criminal walks away, but the gun always kills (unless your a dodgy sprinter, bad shot and/or run out of ammo).

Nothing wrong with carrying a knife IMO, but a combat knife is unnecessary, especially when you're not in combat
There isn't any thing you can't do with a pocket knife that you can do with that (beyond giving someone a seven inch deep wound).

Make sure you know how to use it or it can be turned against you just like the poor sap in saving private ryan.
Why mess around with blades though, get a gun so you don't have to get all messy.
No#1 rule :don't pull it out unless your going to use it.
I'd suggest starting out with a .22 & moving up to whatever you like after mastering it.

I suppose you may get some odd looks if you carried one of these, unless you were like doing extreme survival in the woods or something.

When I get older I'm planning on being a very outdoor type person, y'know camping out in the woods and so on, living off the land for a few days, so a suitable survival knife would be a recommended item to take with me.

If you are gonna carry a knife rember "Thou shall not stab thyself."....jk i think you sound mature enough not to do that, but isnt that knife little to big. At least get some lessons on useing it if and only if for self defense. Have also consider of learning Muay Thai i mean if your planing to finish off the defense then finish the other guy of with your fist's.

No seriously, that's a damn good rule.

My very first knife, little double-edged dagger piece of junk, came with a sheath so tight that when I finally managed to draw the thing it startled me so bad...

...I overcompensated trying to keep from swinging it wide to my right and brought it right back, drove the point in to the first joint on my finger deep enough to hit bone. "Ouch" would be an understatement. I still have the scar some 20-odd years later.

Anyways, this is my favorite out of my collection, but I don't carry it ever because as far as I know, there's only three more in the world like it.

Really nice little Rob Criswell piece I picked up in Portland a few years back. Okay "little" isn't the right word, it's almost a foot long and the spine of it is about the same thickness as your average meat cleaver.

Agreed. Pulling out a knife in the face of a crazed attacker would be like a red rag to a bull. Why bring a deadly weapon wherever you go? All it does is ensure there is a weapon available if someone wants to hurt you badly.

Anyway, if (as you claim) you know how to avoid fights, you won't be needing a knife.
yeh to tell u the truth bringing a knife into a fight is honestly one of the worst things i think u can do. cause picture this
somebody starts shit with u and u start to fight, u pull out ur knife and the guy ur fighting says o so thats how it his and then he pulls out his knife, maybe even worse a gun. then u have urself a knife fight and then u know that someone is going to get killed or atleast severely injured, if ur ever in a situation where weapons are involved, just dont get involved. there are some craaaaazy people out there man.

I got three knives, Swiss army knife, Survival knife kit thingy, and of course my hunting knife...

From what i know though, its best not to carry around a larger knife because people will wonder what you're up to, because generally you won't need a large knife in regular daily living.  If someone perceives your knife as a potential threat for whatever reason, such as if you act aggressive and they see it, then it is illegal.  Simple as that.
