i was very impressed with Austria. My mum broke her arm there. they had her x-rayed, plastered and ready to go on her way in 2 hours.

Did not pay any money on the day, the bill was sent to our address in Australia about 6 weeks later.

Nice...  I wonder how France is #1.  In "Sicko", they showed doctors making housecalls 24 hours a day.  I'm not sure how it's possible for a country with 60 million people to have a system like that, but man, it must be working.

Due to political correctness, I can't find a ranking separately for Taiwan or Hong Kong, but I'm willing to bet that they beat the shit out of the rest of China's rank.

China should just go ahead and admit that Taiwan is a separate country.

One question I have, as I am not very well-versed in any of the medical systems yet but what is the salary of medical professions in a country like the United States is now compared to a country with the socialized system? It might be lower but I'd hope there isn't any huge disparity between them.

It's not general salaries that differ so much, it's the difference between what a G.P. and a specialist makes that defines the situation most.

In America, specialists make an average of 300% more than G.P.'s.  In the U.K., the difference is only about 30%.

As a result, we have far more specialists than we really need, while we have a relative shortage of G.P.'s.  The U.K. has a far lower G.P. to patient ratio than we do.

I believe American doctors make about twice as much as UK doctors (last time I checked).  Also I believe the rules here in the United States are easier to open a practice than they are in the UK...I could be wrong - perhaps a real doctor can share some light?

Additionally about 50% of doctors in the UK are foreign doctors brought in, while I believe about 20% in the United States.

Perhaps the foreign doctors are driving down wages?

That's a possibility, but if that's true, then shit...  That's awesome for the consumer.

America's system only benefits insurance companies.  Fuck that...

I'd hazard a guess that they have 24 hour emergency rooms and the much better quality of care makes up for the rest.

We could say Taiwan is part of Japan.

We could say Taiwan is part of Japan.
Except that no-one recognises them as part of Japan, and recognition is the definition of a country.

The American's Health system benefits three groups of people...the well off, the really poor and illegal aliens  If you are in the middle you're fucked.

Let me explain.  If you have money you can afford heath care.  If you are really poor or are an illegal alien then you can get free healthcare.

Why so many Canadians come to America for treatment?  When you have to wait 4 months for a simple MRI that could save your life...why would you want that type of health care?
Well that's why some of us want a mix system. Waiting for an MRI is not for me, there is private clinic where you can get those services for 500$ or so. But those who wait either don't have the money or just don't want to pay. (understandable they paid all of their life for this , why pay more)

the problem is that we have the scanners, but hospitals have money (and personel) to make it run a set amount of time. Private sector would like to rent the scanner and use it when it available to treat more people (at lower cost) , but private and public sector don't mix to well in our culture, particularly in the healthcare sector.

As for treatment of patient on your side of the border, if they have the money.... why not. it's their choice.
Well, if we go by the WHO's rankings of healthcare systems, then France is the place to live.....

1         France

...........

50        Poland

Maybe learning French isn't such a bad idea....
I've been to hospital in France and been to French doctors on numerous occasions. I have nothing but criticism for their crappy healthcare system - one of the worst I have ever had the misfortune to have to rely upon.

One thing that Australia also offers is that if you get private health insurance. The fee you pay is tax deductible.

I would prefer to see the money that is given in deductions poured into the public systems.

It's our choice also.  If I do not have insurance, I go to a public hospital.  If I have insurance, I have choices.
I wonder if you could have private insurance if you didn't have to pay so much in taxes for public hospital?
The problem with this is what i'll save in taxes I will pay to the insurance company which will set my prenium base on the risk I am for them to cover. And this i'm sure gonna cost me more than my part of the taxe that goes to healthcare.

Any 31 year old non-smoker  6 feet tall 175 pounds american want to tell us how much it cost them to get coverage?????

Lets say you don't have any money and are hurt, by law they have to treat you. Thats why it's great to be here illegally.
For life threatening injuries, not everything???

It's also true here, but would not want to change it. However the part that the insurance company don't pay for is also deductible, and that i would  change ( if a mix system private/public is to be created here), if you have enough money to go to a private clinic/hospital (after taxes and all) than you don't need to be refunded by the gov. It would be like takin money from the public system to fund the private sector, and nullified any advantage of a mix system.
