So, a few of you on BF2S (most likely the UK members) may have heard about the release of Prince's new album - Planet Earth - in a national newspaper, The Mail On Sunday. This is the only way you'll be able to acquire Prince's album in the UK as it will not be generally released by SonyBMG.
Now, I went and brought The Mail On Sunday (to my eternal shame - what a load of claptrap it produces), walked back up my hill and proceeded to through it in the recycling bin. Realising my error in throwing the CD away as well, I retrieved it and listened to it (as one generally does with a CD of music). 44 minutes of my life just listening to Prince - oh, and laughing, of course. Okay, I have to admit that Prince really isn't my style of music. Not at all. But hey, for a 'free' CD (the 'price' being having to buy The Mail On Sunday rather than The Independent On Sunday) it wasn't too shabby. There must be quite a lot of people who bought the newspaper just for the CD (myself being one of them) and others who will be overjoyed to have a free Prince CD as a bonus to their usual purchase.
Now, BF2S community, I have two questions for you:
  • Do you think this could this become a fairly common system of distribution for new release albums?
  • Would you have bought the newspaper for this album?

Also, you are free to further comment on whatever aspect of this topic you wish.
I have to admit Prince fans will be satisfied by an eclectic mix of styles on display.

All the best,
Andy

We get The Times and The Mail free on Sundays because we get them every other day of the week. Haven't listened to it and probably wont though.

I think Albums will become a thing of the past, and singles for download will become the main thing. Ash have already said this, and focussed on their singles.

Yeah, I can see that happening too.

It's sad, really. I truly do like going to the shops to purchase albums. It's good to see a band's track listing. Oh well, shame and a "Sign O' The Times" as Prince would say!
