I think Iraq has proven that nation-building is usually a shitty idea.

I mean, if you're gonna blow the shit out of a country, you're supposed to leave when you finish overthrowing the government.  If they cause more problems after that, then you blow the shit out of them again.

Rebuilding a country the size of Iraq is just too expensive, but destroying one is relatively easy and cheap by comparison.

No, you are actually supposed to leave SOMEONE in charge of the goverment of the nation you are attacking to officially surrender. The war never officially ended since the goverment basically evaporated.

And nation building has worked a couple times.  Germany and Japan ring a bell.

I blame the actual Iraqi people.  Not the commoners, but the people who reach for power.  Tell me why the 2nd cousin of a local judge needs special privilages?  The way they conduct business in Iraq is very similar to something we have in America; only here, we call it the Mafia.

The Iraqis vew kidnapping, torture, and assassinations as perfectly acceptable tactics for a common political dissagreement.  And say what you will about how bad American politics is, but political adversaries here in the US seldom need to fear for their lives from their competitors.

Hey, I don't disagree with your assessment, but it's the reason why I think we should leave.  Why continue this given the level of corruption involved?  And by the way, our contractors are pretty corrupt in their own right....

Anyway, Germany and Japan worked out because the people were unified.  There wasn't a massive sectarian conflict going on in Japan when we occupied them.
