I'm trying to get the aviator ribbon... but I'm possibly the worst combat pilot ever... I can fly with no problem, but I can never hit my targets with the drop bombs... does it have to lock on or something?

Use your search option on the tool bar of this forum.  I know that there are at least three threads on this and a video to watch that will aid you in this.  Other than those tools, I'd recommend jumping in a local server and bomb bridges or stationary targets to get the hang of it.  Remember to switch views (the "C" button) to the rear view to see how close you were, then adjust your rate of dive, speed and release time from there.

No sadly the ground bombs you have are not smart bombs even thought it's the 21st century the planes in bf2 carry dumb bombs that you need to eyeball in it game. Everything is based on the speed of the plane and the hieght you droped your payload. Don't drop it on top of the target or targets drop it before them. Also don't get to low when droping bombs or you will damage your plane. Second when flying to an air target like a chopper reduce speed so that the first time you lock on and he drops flares and they disapear, it's a clear and easy kill try to use your gun aswell it's a very usefull tool. Remember keep the plane just above stall speed. Also an easy way for kills don't flame me for this is raping the carrier at the start of a game like on wake everyone will say stop raping the carrier but you can lock on to choppers there and fire on the first lock bescause there flares only work up high and will burn out to quick.

Quick note to all chopper pilots in BF2 in real life you fly as low as you can go but in bf2 fly as high as you can to avoid sams on the ground don't weav and dodge just climb and drop flares. Because when these low choppers pilots in bf2 drop flares they go into the water and you're toast. I only say this because I have been killed a number of times because of an idiot pilot that follow these rules.

To all attack chopper pilots in bf2 it's not all about you, your gunner is your best friend. Make it easy on him, give him easy shots DON'T MAKE IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE FOR HIM TO GET A KILL. By weaving and dodging a missle from a SAM climb and drop flares your safe turn around and let him nail that ass in the launcher.

Sorry for the vent I'm just pissed this morning.

My brother just got his Aviator Ribbon last night.  We found our new ‘favorite toy’, the fighter/bomber.  You can earn your ribbon as a co-pilot and you only need to find a decent and courteous pilot (harder than it sounds, I know) who is willing to line up targets for you.  As for what Sand_Shark said about helo pilots giving their gunners more opportunity for kills, the same goes for fighter/bomber pilots.  I usually leave my bombs set to active and when I see a target light up I let my co-pilot know.  Then I slow my plane down and allow him to lock on.  Locked on…missile away…confirmed kill.  It’s just that easy.

My brother and I split the responsibilities of the aircraft, where I’ll take out AA turrets, jeeps, and the occasional armor, while he takes out most of the armor out.  As the co-pilot my brother also keeps an eye on our six, which leads me to my next point.  As a co-pilot it’s important that you are able to use the alternate views while flying (C-key or Control+Mouse).  When we have a missile lock against us and I’m trying to evade a fighter it’s nice to know which way to peel off.  If nothing else, it’s a fair trade if the pilot is lining up targets for you.  Besides, it’s the best way to stay alive.

As a general rule…take your turn, if you crash and there are already guys waiting for the plane, give it to them.

Ya, I know, it's pretty unrealistic to expect people to just give the plane to someone else.  It's just that I get pissed when I get TK'd cause some punk wants the plane or if people stand on the runway so they can punish you.  I'm not the best pilot but usually can last most of the round (barring the other team having really good fighter pilots).

My bro and I usually like to make our rounds in a attack chopper and on many an occasion my brother makes it into the gunner seat with the other 31 of us try for the pilot seat.  Then 1 of 10 snipers raises his barrel and plugs my brother in the head.  I make it a point to take down the guys name and take him out every time I see him on or near the helo pad for the rest of the round.  Then type him a message not to TK for vehicles.  I guess I am a vigilante in that way.  Justice will be served...haha.
