Hey guys,

You may have read my recent thread concerning PSU's : http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?id=79473

My Specs are :

Pentium 4 w/Ht 3.0Ghz
1.5G PC3200 RAM
Stock Gigabyte Mobo
512mb Palit 7900GS
X-fi Extreme Gamer
315W PSU - My problem

So i'm running my Graphics Card (512mb version of this)  : http://www.palit.biz/en/products/nv_pcie_7900GS.html

At these default clocks :  https://img233.imageshack.us/img233/7803/gfxclockssw3.png

Running 2142 at these settings : https://img168.imageshack.us/img168/3353/videoao9.jpg

I get a max of 30/40FPS and often lag (seems to be worse in bf2142 than bf2 where all settings are high) and i was wondering ... could be stock 315W PSU be killing my frames? It was originally from PC world but since buying it have added the 7900GS, more RAM and an x-fi .... opinions please - i've tested it with some online PSU calculators ... to find i should have like a 450/500W PSU ....

I've had various help from Bertster and Kyle to name a few and would like some opinions on a PSU.

I have come up with 3, possibly 4 solutions :

[*]1 - Hiper 530W Black Type-M - http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/112899

[*]2 - Enermax Liberty 400W - http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/106368/rb/0

[*]3 - Seasonic S12 Series 430W - http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/104478/rb/0

[*]4 - (Possible solution) - Antec TruePower Trio 430W - http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/114930

These are what i've come up with, bearing in mind i anticipate upgrading to a C2D soon, possibly oc'ing it and my Graphics Card ... please vote in the poll and post your suggesions

Or, if anyone has any ideas for a 400W+ PSU within the £45-£50 budget please let me know

EDIT : How many watts do you guys think i need?

Thanks, Mitch

Those PSU calculators are no where near accurate.

If your PSU wasn't enough juice it simply wouldn't be enough juice. It would not lag you, it would probably freeze your system or shut it off.

However, 315W is pretty low so I would agree that you'd need a better one. Personally I would get the Hyper Type-R 580W.

Seasonic S12.

My second choice of those would be the Enermax Liberty.

But it's a little expensive tbh, near 2x my budget

May i ask why bertster? Why the Lower wattages over the higher ones?

Cheers,

Dude, please OC your video card. I have the same one as you and I'm running 550 Core and 760 Mem.

I go an extra 100MHz out of both of them.

If you are willing to buy used, the Hiper Type-R 580W costs £50 max. I have my faulty one right beside me!

The 580W is barely more than the 530W.

Keep in mind though that wattage isn't everything, so either one is fine.

Only thing i'm worried about Bert is if that 430W will be enough .... for some oc'ing and a probable C2D in the future .... thoughts?

You do realise C2Ds use less power, right?

Actually what it would do is lower the clock settings on your graphics card since it sucks so much juice.

Get a much bigger PSU with more RAM.

The 7900 should fly then.

Outervision's Pro version works a treat and is very accurate, assuming you know what you are doing with capacitor readings etc.

Known too many people have problems due to not good enough PSU.... thats why I've got 750W .... (but that is so I can SLI up at some point)

All your options still too low imho. so Null Vote

Why are they to low?  You can put a 8800 in a system with 600W, so 4-500 sounds just about right to me

Yah, i understand that Bert, but i want to leave my options open - ie. upgrading components without having to worry about another new PSU in a year or two's time ...

Hmm, could try it .... but what difference will 512mb more RAm do? I'm limited to slower stuff due to my mobo ....and i've already got 1 and a half gigs of the fastest stuff my mobo will support in there

Absolutely no clue what you're talking about Kyle .. could you explain?

Massive thanks to those who've contributed so far ,,, please keep it coming!

another question bert .... what are the dimensions of a "full tower case"?

i only ask because in this review there are worries about cable lengths if using a full tower case : http://www.ocia.net/reviews/stealthxstr … age3.shtml

Cheers,

mitch

EDIT : My case dimensions ... 40cm  (H) x 18.5cm (W) x 39cm (D) approx.

If an Antec P182 is a "full tower case" then i've got a smaller case .....

Im not to sure if those frames are that far off what they should be for that rig  to be honest..........
if you know for a fact that they are then i would go for the antec true power, as Antec are one of the higest quality PSU's you can get..
430Watts should be plenty for your rig....

i Run a more power hungry pc then that on 430watts.....

good luck

hmm - i now wonder if 600W is too much - maybe the 530W Hiper would be better .....
