Okay, so I've got an Icemat Siberia headset. It has the headset with the green audio plug, and a removable microphone with the pink mic plug. So I plug the green plug into my X-Fi, and the pink plug into my X-Fi's "FlexiJack" (mic port basically). The headset works fine, but Windows XP doesn't seem to recognize the mic.

I then try plugging the mic into my onboard mic port, and the same thing happens - no detection. The mic is turned on (no mute button AFAIK), but even tapping the mic doesn't do anything in sound recorder.

Am I doing something wrong, or am I so unlucky as to order TWO FUBAR microphones in a row?

did you make sure you switched the pink port to mic in, in your audio settings?

I don't think there's a setting for it. Pink port usually means mic port.

Check your Volume Control -> Properties.
  • Make sure the device is set to your X-Fi.
  • Make sure that Line in is selected so that it shows the volume control for it, then that will tell you if it is muted or not.
